Re: Scanner failure during the initalization/starts up.
Sound as if your scanner is broken.. Could be something in there stopping it from moving, the motor could be bad. It might have Home Positioning errors, causing this error. To get it Fixed? The machine is about 140 dollars on Amazon? The company I work for, the first hour is 125 (I do not know how much it cost to repair these) Unfortunately these little ink jet printers are not designed to be repaired. They are considered throw away. Sorry

The issue is with hardware of the printer.
Scan feature is most expensive and sensitive part of the printer.
I suggest you to contact HP support. If the printer is under warranty you may get a replacement printer or else they may give you a better option.
If not on warranty you may try this workaround:
With unit off, press the 'Cancel' (pink button) and 'Color' (green button).
This will start the printer in a diagnostic mode. Press '1' to run the diagnostics.
Press 'Enter' or other keys as directed by the display prompts. When you don't know what to press, the 'Enter' key usually works. Some of the keys called for (for example 'Plus' and 'Minus') are not on every psc 2210 keyboard. They are mapped to one of the "directional" keys just above the numeric keypad area next to the 'Enter' key. Keep trying keys till one works.
After all the diagnostics, the display will either go blank or display 'Initializing...' . Wait 10-20 seconds to make sure it isn't doing anything else then press the 'On' key.
The printer should start without the scanner error and the grinding/chattering noise.
Leave the printer on because the next power cycle brings the chattering noise back.
But, when it does, the procedure above seems to fix it every time.
I'm havign a problem with my scanner to this product i bought before (hp psc 2210xi all in one printer). Before my computer is window XP when i bought this printer and its win XP too. Now im using Win Vista im having a problem with my printer. I can use or i can't use my scanner couse its not compalitble the both product. My question can u pls give me the drive or the down load to make this two (my computer and printer to be compatible in my vista. Is there a site or upgrade download site that i can found to Win VIsta printer for me to download?Pls its very kind if you can halp me .
Switch the unit. let it rest for half an hour. While it is resting check the manual for any 'faults' list.
Look for a 'reset' command - may be mean pressing several buttons while the machine is off and then with the buttons still pressed switch on the machine[you may need two hands and a nose or three hands for this ;-)]
If still out of luck go to places for further info
