Question about Kenmore 22622 Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Re: gearcase Thanks for the quick reply jsrock, I think I will go ahead and order a new transmission and do it myself. The Sears repairman suggested that I get a new clutch as well, I think it lists for $38. The $300 figure was the cost of the gearcase, clutch and $70 estimate (that I already paid for) and taxes. I'm not sure if I need to replace the clutch, what do you think? Thanks for supplying the link on the procedure.

Its hard to tell without seeing it. If the clutch is covered in oil (from the gearcase), it may be a good idea to replace it. Otherwise, you can reuse the old one. Let me know if you get to a point where you're stuck and need assistance.

PS The gearcase has specific instructions on the container that it be shipped in the UPRIGHT position. This prevents the gearcase oil from leaking out. In addition, there is a small breather hole on the top of the gearcase, that is sealed with paint prior to shipping. Don't forget to use a scribe or an awl to open this breather hole BEFORE installation.

Kenmore 110.26492502 top load washing machine is leaking oil (yellowish with black). any chance, as a DIY-er,i can solve this? its turning 5 years old already... thanks! rex

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

The model number you provided doesn't appear on the Sears site. Are you sure it's the right number??

Enter your model number (110.#######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Pulling the cabinet, pump, motor and gearcase are relatively easy. Getting the 8 bolts off of the gearcase and removing the top can get a bit messy as the gearcase holds 15 Oz. of gear oil. (Easily replaced with non-detergent gear oil from a local auto parts shop.

This is a Whirlpool / kenmore Serviced Manual PDF for top load, direct drive washers:

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

See the Following Whirlpool parts list for alternatives to the Sears part numbers.

In order to get the transmission out, you have to remove the cabinet, the fabric dispenser and both agitators. The top agitator uses a plastic 1/2" drive bolt (a 1/2" socket extension works well).

You don't have to remove the drum. See the following:

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

Lay the machine down (after disconnectYing power and hoses, remove the pump (two clips), the motor (two screws hold two clips on the motor), lift and set the motor aside.

Remove two 1/2 inch bolts for the motor mounting plate and three 1/2 inch bolts for the transmission.

Pull the transmission, remove the clutch (there is a spring clip that holds the clutch on the main agitator shaft), and remove the 8 screws carefully the transmission holds 15Oz of 80-90 weight gear oil.

You should be able to either re-seat the cover or make a thin gasket using automotive "liquid gasket seal" products.

And the Whirlpool Parts list for these washers:

It sounds as if the Gearcase Cover Seal may be worn and is allowing transmission oil to work it's way up the main agitator shaft.

I'd pull the motor and transmission to check for leaking and probably check all of the seals on the gearcase and drive tube.

(IT SOUNDS LIKE A REAL PAIN BUT ISN'T.) THE PARTS TO REPAIR ANY SEALS ARE INEXPENSIVE.:

For example, the above part number 3349985 is $9.09 at Sears and is a basic Whirlpool part.

See the following for how to release the console and cabinet and how to pull the pump, motor, gearcase and drive tube.

Also see the following Whirlpool document on the transmission.

Overall, its a lot less expensive to replace a couple of seals than to replace a $170 gearcase.

MOdel 110.92579110 leaking water out bottom of

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.92579110

LEAKING:

See the Sears site sub-components for the agitator, basket and tub. It's possible that one of the gaskets or seals has worn over time.

I'd also pull off the cabinet and check the hoses leading to and from the pump. It's also possible that the pump is leaking.

See the following for how to remove the cabinet.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

The illustrations also show how to remove the transmission.

OIL

The black oil / fluid that you see is likely coming from the transmission.

Since it seems to be "spraying" around the inside of the cabinet, I'd assume that it is leaking from the top seal between the transmission and clutch.

See the following for a parts breakdown of Whirlpool top load direct drive washers.

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%20W10114743.pdf

If you look at page 15, you'll see a Seal, Gearcase Cover. It is possible that that is the cause of your transmission leak.

The rust on the bottom of the transmission may (hopefully) be simply caused by the water leak.

I'd remove the gearcase cover (8 bolts) in order to check the gearcase cover seal, and to check the oil level. The Whirlpool transmission takes about 15oz or 80-90 weight oil.

Gearcase woes

Okay...after working on these model washer numerous times, it is NOT uncommon for a gearcase to fail. At least, it wasn't in my area of the country. It's also not as big of a job, nor an expensive one. A new gearcase runs about $163 at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your complete model number and locate item number 9 under the "Brake/Clutch/Gearcase/Motor/Pump" heading. The part number is 3360629. If you decide to replace this on your own, the following link explains how to replace the gearcase step-by-step:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r699497-replacing_gearcase

You would be amazed at how easy it is to perform this repair. I've personally done many of them. I don't know where the DIY estimate came from, but this repair should not cost you $300. I would recommend, however, that if you replace the gearcase, to replace the motor coupling as well. I hope you find this information encouraging. Let me know what you decide.

Kenmore top loader Model 110.20712990

It could be the coupler, but I doubt it. More commonly, this is the symptom of a gearcase (transmission) going bad. Couplers typically just snap off or the center hole rounds out causing it to slip. The result: the washer will fill and drain, but will not agitate or spin. The telltale sign of a bad gearcase is the grinding noise you mentioned and the requirement for you to assist the spin under a load. In addition, if you inspect under the washer, sometimes the gearcase will begin to leak a honey colored oil. You may find droplets under the washer, and in extreme cases, you may find spray patterns along the interior cabinet walls.

Now before the sense of panic sets in, replacing a gearcase on this model washer is not that difficult and it can be accomplished by the average do-it-yourselfer with some guidance. I have a link that explains step-by-step how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

Read through the link thoroughly and see if this is job that sounds like you wish to attempt on your own. No special tools are required. A screwdriver set and socket set is all you should need.

A replacement gearcase can be found at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and locate item number 9 under the "Brake/Clutch/Gearcase/Motor/Pump" heading. The part number is 3360629. If you are going to replace the gearcase, it is also recommended that you replace the motor coupling as well. The coupling is listed under the same heading as item number 13 (part number 285753A). You can also check out repairclinic.com to see if they carry the parts any cheaper. Use the part numbers provided. I will post the link that explains how to replace the coupling as well:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

Many of the steps are a repeat, but I try to be thorough. Some of the original motor couplings that came from the manufacturer would not last long under constant use, because they were made entirely of plastic. The manufacturer modified this part to include a steel grommet that makes it much more durable. The new part is listed with the part on the website, and included in the link I provided.

NOTE: If you do order a replacement gearcase make sure you follow the instructions on the outside of the box. There should arrows indicating that the gearcase needs to be shiped in the UPRIGHT position. If not, transmission oil will leak.

I hope you find this information helpful. The staff asks us to refrain from direct contact with the consumer and only allows us to answer questions in this forum. I hope you don't mind. Let me know if you require additional assistance.

I had this problem and did not have the time to fix it myself so I called Sears. The "tech" looked at his laptop, called his "supervisor" a couple of times and told my wife that both control boards needed replaced at a cost of over $500. The manuals, with testing procedures for the inclined, are on the inside, front cover.
The CE error is a communications failure and on mine it required replacement of the AVS board. I bought the part at a local supply house and replaced it myself for about $175.
