Here's another way of setting up your router.

Launch Internet explorer and on the address bar type:

It will prmpt you for a username and password. if you haven't changed it yet the default username is admin and the password is password.

look for wireless settings on the left side and configure the type of security you want.

Netgear wireless router wgr614?

If you cannot login to the router's configuration URL, then you can reset the Netgear back to the factory defaults by powering up the router and press the pinhole RESET button at the back of the router until the LEDs turn on, then release the RESET button and wait for the router to reboot.
Then connect a LAN cable from the computer to the router open an Internet Browser and enter the router's configuration URL
The default login = admin
The default password = password.
You can now configure the wireless settings, Eg. SSID, encryption etc.

I have a Netgear router -but I dont have the same computer that I used to set up Internet connection. My router works but is not secure

the computer you have should make no difference to how the router works.
If your wifi connection is insecure you will need to login to it and add the security under the advanced/wireless (wifi) options and add a password.
if you connect to the router with a cable then just turn off (disable) the wifi, you don't need to set up the security.

Want to secure the site

First off... a manual will help you understand your options alot easier so here is a link to it:

You did not say specifically but I assume you want to set up wireless security. This is set in the router under wireless security and you have a few options. You can use WEP or WPA security. Either one would use a passphrase. This is set on the router and on your pc. I would also suggest doing a bit of googling on wireless security basics. It will cover not broadcasting the SID, using mac filtering, WPA and WEP security.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa

Secured networking

Configuring WEP:

1. Connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the NETGEAR router.
2. Open an Internet explorer and type the router IP address which would be either or (by default, refer to your product documentation ti determine the default IP address.) in the address bar and press Enter.
The Login window will be prompting for a Username and Password. The default Username is admin and the default Password is password
3. Click Wireless Settings under Setup menu.

4. Under Security Options, Select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
5. Select Authentication type as Automatic and Encryption Strength as 64-bit (or 128-bit) - You must later configure your wireless computers with the same setting.
6. Select Key 1 and enter any 10 hexadecimal digits - any combination of 0-9, A-F (26 digits if you selected 128-bit as the encryption strength) and Apply the settings. Please note down these values - You must later configure your wireless computers with the same setting.
Hope that helps.....
