Since I found it difficult to add a Tip say: which is applicable to all XP..

So I go for product viz. window xp home edition then add the tips

But when I look into the tips posted in Window XP Professional, my tip is not showing there (so I go add it again there)

Thats why I add heading in Tips posted so far : applicable to all window xp, and blah blah blah..

I made the tip to make easy for the client in the way I found suitable for myself and not designed to down other tips (if I do so)

Being a Science Postgraudate, english grammer and syntax are not good.. but I will keep my point clear in making any new tip further

Thanks for your suggestion and reply

    Regards,

    Scott Ellin

Yes that what I tried to get for all window Xp but the Option available is only -- For all Operating system.

So I did not choose that one.

Yes the Tip was added successfully and shown in my profile. But how it can be viewable or searchable by the client (if you know let me explain)

Since, I guess client basically go to home page of FixYa and then Click for HELP WITH ME and if the question related to his querry comeup there he will browse through it and also may check the tip..

Probability of getting the solution in TIP for a product can be increased if selected "Applicable for All Operating System".

Anyway thanks for guiding me upto this, I am learning here lot.

Hi Scott, Been off for several days, a little vacation to rest up and recharge.
Do you still need help in trying to get a foothold on starting a Tip? Its not that easy, but can be deciphered. Let me know if you figured it out our need a pointer? What category in general did you want to place your Tip within?

Generally speaking a Tip and Trick should be based on actual knowledge gained in the field and not a new way in which to write one out.

They often get their impetus from this perspective: In order to simplify your responses to questions that get asked all the time, you write a Tip and then post a url to that Tip instead of writing out the solution over and over again. Tips can be rated too, either Helpful or not. A Helpful rating gets you four blue diamonds.

Regards and honor the reason we have all taken the time to write Tips that work and function in real world problems.

    Scott,

I went and read most of your Tips you've posted so far. I see many earning you four blue diamonds.

It looks like you have the hang of posting a Tip down. As I wrote a few new Tips myself this week pertaining to Canon printers, I kept thinking of how to compose a Tip on writing Tips on FixYa.

What would you say is the main thing you learned by trying that could help others? And, formatting your Tip helps a great deal too. And, you seem to have managed to take advantage of character formatting, with bold, underline and italics, etc. I'm certain there are other hidden formatting features left to be found.

The only real constructive feedback I can give you is in your use of English grammar and syntax. Your writing reads like English is your second language. You have stated you are from England, Were you raised by parents who spoke a foreign language such as High German as spoken in Switzerland? Please don't be offended. Your points are made well in your Tips. I worked as an Editor for many many years and the reason Lauren referred you to me was that she knows I have been published in non fiction writing and these were mostly How-to articles and books that are cataloged in the Library of Congress here in the US. So, as a technical writer myself and having taught computer science in the college classroom, my own speaking and writing is based on those past experiences.

In any case, nice Tips. Keep up the good work. Instead of rewriting an older tip, I'd build upon it and then reference that older tip, if this comes up for you (it did for me just the other day) I suggest you notify the author of the older tip. I did this myself and included a lnk to that other tip in my How-To Tip.

    Regards,
    Worldvet

When you first posted your tip for Windows XP Pro, and found it wasn't there did you look at your Profile Page and click on your Tips to see if that was added or not?

I do find its best to post under All...... rather than a single product type.

It is amazing just how many users come here, do the search, and then rely on the Tips Section for help. My Tips have earned me a lot of FixYa's as you are earning from them too. It is a secret garden on FixYa.

More Tips For Windows 7

So I been Messing Around With Windows 7 and Created a list of new things for people that don't know much about windows 7. <br /> <span> <p><b>Minimize (Almost) All Windows:</b> <b>Win + Home</b><br /> <p>This combo lets you send all open windows packing--except the one that's currently active. Sure beats clicking Minimize on a bunch of individual windows. When you tap the shortcut a second time, it restores all previously open windows.<br /> <p><br /> <p><b>Make Windows Transparent: Win + Space</b><br /> <p>This is the keyboard equivalent of mousing over the transparency tool in the right corner of the System Tray--great for those times when you need to something on the desktop (like a gadget) but don't want to minimize all your windows. After tapping <i>Win-Space</i>, your windows will stay see-through until you let go of the Windows key.<br /> <p><br /> <p><b>Quick-Launch Taskbar Apps: Win + (1-9)</b><br /> <p>As you know, Windows 7 makes it a snap to "pin" frequently used programs to the taskbar. But did you also know that these programs are automatically assigned a number and corresponding Windows-key shortcut? Just press <i>Windows-1</i> to launch the first pinned program (the one closest to the Start button), <i>Windows-2</i> to launch the next one, and so on. Fastest app-launching known to man! Except, of course, for this...<br /> <p><br /> <p><b>Quick-Launch Any App: Hotkey</b><br /> <p>Like Vista before it, Windows 7 lets you assign a quick-launch hotkey to any installed program. Just right-click the program's icon, choose <i>Properties</i>, and then click the <i>Shortcut</i> tab. Click once in the <i>Shortcut key field</i>, then press the hotkey combo you want to assign (<i>Ctrl-Shift-H</i>, for instance). Click <i>OK</i> and you're done! Assuming you have a good memory, app launching doesn't get any faster than this.<br /> <p><br /> <p><b>Dock Active Windows: Win + Left or Right Arrow</b><br /> <p>A great shortcut for users with widescreen monitors, this combo docks the active window to the left or right half of the screen (depending on which arrow you tap), at the same time maximizing it top-to-bottom.<br /> <p><br /> <p><b>Magnify Your View: Win + (+)</b><br /> <p>Windows 7's built-in magnifier lets you zoom in wherever you place your cursor. Just tap <i>Win-plus</i> (that's the Windows key and the plus key) to enable the magnifier and set a 200% zoom level. When you mouse to any edge of the screen, your view scrolls accordingly. The more you tap the keys, the higher the zoom. Of course, you can just as easily zoom out again with <i>Win-minus</i>.<br /> <p><br /> <p><b>Open Presentation Settings: Win + P</b><br /> <p>Good news for business users constantly struggling to get Windows to cooperate with<a href="http://www.pcworld.com/products/home_theater/projectors.html">projectors</a>: A quick tap of <i>Win-P</i> activates a monitor-settings panel. Click <i>Duplicate</i> or <i>Projector only</i> to send your display to the big screen, or <i>Extend</i> if you've connected a second monitor and want extra screen real estate.<br /> <p><br /> <p><b>Create a New Folder: Ctrl + Shift + N</b><br /> <p>Forget the old way of creating new folders. In Windows 7, all it takes is a tap of <i>Ctrl-Shift-N</i>. This works in any open Explorer window, but also on the desktop. After the new folder appears, just type in a name as usual and hit <i>Enter</i>.<br /> <p><br /> <p><b>Bring Gadgets to the Fore: Win + G</b><br /> <p>Now that Windows' gadgets are no longer relegated to the Sidebar, they're free to sit anywhere on your desktop. Of course, that means they can get obscured by other windows. As you now know, a tap of <i>Win-Space</i> makes those windows temporarily see-through, but what if you want to put the gadgets on <i>top</i> of your windows? No problem: Just tap <i>Win-G</i>.<br /></span>

Computer Maintenance

You may not realize it, but your computer and your car have something in common: they both need regular maintenance. No, you don't need to change your computer's oil. But you should be updating your software, keeping your antivirus subscription up to date, and checking for spyware. Read on to learn what you can do to help improve your computer's security.

Getting started

Here are some basics maintenance tasks you can do today to start improving your computer's security. Be sure you make these part of your ongoing maintenance as well.

* Sign up for software update e-mail notices. Many software companies will send you e-mail whenever a software update is available. This is particularly important for your operating system, your antivirus program, and your firewall.

* Register your software. If you still have send them in. And be sure to register new software in the future. This is another way for the software manufacturer to alert you when new updates are available.

* Install software updates immediately. When you get an update notice, download the update immediately and install it. (Remember, downloading and installing are two separate tasks.)

An ounce of prevention

A few simple steps will help you keep your files safe and clean.

* Step 1: Update your software
* Step 2: Backup your files
* Step 3: Use antivirus software and keep it updated
* Step 4: Change your passwords

Developing ongoing maintenance practices

Now that you've done some ground work,, it's time to start moving into longer term maintenance tasks. These are all tasks that you should do today (or as soon as possible) to get started. But for best results, make these a part of a regular maintenance schedule. We recommend setting aside time each week to help your computer secure.

* Back up your files. Backing up your files simply means creating a copy of your computer files that you can use in the even the originals are lost. (Accidents can happen.) To learn more read our tips for backing up information.

* Scan your files with up to date antivirus software. Use your antivirus scan tool viruses and worms. Also, check your antivirus program's user manual to see if you can schedule an automatic scan of your computer. To learn more, read our tips for reducing your virus risk.

* Change your passwords. Using the same password increases the odds that someone else will discover it. Change all of your passwords regularly (we recommend monthly) to reduce your risk. Also, choose your passwords carefully. To learn more, read our tips for creating stronger passwords.

Making a schedule

One of the best ways to help protect your computer is to perform maintenance regularly. To help you keep track, we suggest making a regular "appointment" with your computer. Treat it like you would any other appointment. Record it in your datebook or online calendar, and if you cannot make it, reschedule. Remember, you are not only helping to improve your computer, you are also helping to protect your persoanl information.

Good luck!

Pinnacle Studio Plus version 10 Keeps Crashing

If you are getting any type of error message or warning message (except a fatal crash message), then , click here to see the FAQ titled "Studio Launch error/warning messages" to resolve these issues. For a fatal crash or any type of lockup/freezing while launching, continue with this FAQ, below.
If Studio was launching for some period of time and then it stopped launching, it is best to try to determine what changes have been made to the computer recently and undo the changes to see if it has an affect on the problem. Here's a short list of what could affect Studio's ability to launch:
  • A Studio patch was applied but it didn't install properly
  • The graphics driver was updated
  • Hardware was installed
We recommend using Windows XP System Restore. You can obtain more information on how System Restore works from the Microsoft web site at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx
Troubleshooting steps for Studio hangs or crashing while launching (starting)
1. RESTART THE COMPUTER. Try restarting the computer
2. WAIT A FEW MINUTES: If Studio still won't launch, wait a few minutes to let it finish launching. We have noticed on some computers that it may take a little while for Studio to completely launch. Studio 10 users click here to see the FAQ on this.
3. LATEST VERSION OF STUDIO. There was a launch problems in previous versions of Studio 10 that are now fixed in the latest version. When troubleshooting any problem, it is always best to be on the latest version of the software.
If you have Studio version 12, download the latest version here.

If you have Studio version 11, download the latest version here.

If you have Studio version 10, download the latest version here .

Note: Studio 11 patches will only patch a previous install of Studio 11. Studio 10 patches will only patch a previous install of Studio 10. Etc.

If you have an older version of Studio (Studio 9 or 10, etc), it is advised for you to update to the current Studio software. The current version is Studio 12. Click Here to go to the Studio 12 Upgrade page.

How to download and install a patch:
  • When downloading the patch make a note of where it is being saved to. We recommend saving the patch to the desktop.
  • Before installing the patch, make sure that you do not have any other programs running. Studio must not be running.
  • Once it is fully downloaded, double-click on the patch to begin the installation.
  • Follow any on-screen prompts to complete the installation. Reboot the computer after applying the patch.

4. SAFE MODE: Try launching Studio in Safe mode. In Safe mode, many device drivers and applications do not load. If Studio will launch in safe mode, then the issue is most likely a configuration problem with your computer. NOTE: We do not recommend using Studio in Safe Mode. This step is for testing purposes only. To start in Safe mode:
  • Shut down the computer
  • When you turn it back on, tap the F8 key every couple seconds until a menu pops up. (If the XP splash screen appears, the F8 keys was pressed too late so restart the computer and try this step again)
  • On the menu, choose Safe Mode, and then press the Enter key
  • Launch Studio
If you need help starting in Safe mode, you can click here to get information on Microsoft's web site
If Studio won't launch in Safe mode, then Studio many not be installed properly or the install may be corrupt. We recommend uninstalling and reinstalling Studio.

Click here to see the FAQ on how to uninstall, then reinstall Studio 10.
