Question about Canon PowerShot SX100 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Lens Error due to trauma

I have a Cannon Power Shot SxX100 IS and love it.

It looks like the lens area (the metal part) has been bent inward and my lens will not extend. I think I may have to have it repair b/c I dont believe you can detach this youself (or so it seems that way).

Anyone have any suggestions on replacement parts or a repair shop?

Without asking directly for an estimate, do you know what the cost of something like that might be off the top of your head?

Precision camera can repair it...they are on line...as well as several others. pick one...the lens assembly will have to be replaced..they are just plastic on the inside.

sorry, I repair this stuff as a hobby so I couldn't venture a guess on cost, most places will give you an estimate after they determine what part it needs and how long it takes to replace it...some for free and some for a nominal fee...you have to contact some and ask them what their policy is on estimates.

My Cannon power shot s5is was saying lens error, restart camera. Does not restart. Lens remains out and switches off.

It seems that either the plastic drive mechanism is worn/damaged, or the motor (possibly it's drive electronics) have failed. If an extended lens is bumped (or dropped) the plastic worm gear assembly suffers damage (easily too), and the mechanism cannot retract.

The E18 error is fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.
Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. Have already fixed several cameras with this problem by using these methods:
