Kenmore Elite refrigerator Model 596.76533500 temperature control panel locked?
2 Months ago I replaced the evap fan on our refridgerator (freezer working, refrigerator not). It has been working well ever since.
A few days ago the temperature alarm sounded and when I went to push the control button to turn it off I discovered that the control panel is not working - none of the controls respond when I push on the buttons. The refrigerator also seems "quieter" than normal - like the fans aren't running how they typically are supposed to. The temp seems ok in both the refrigerator and freezer, however, I am not noticing visible cold air rush out when I open the freezer and I always used to see it. I unplugged the unit for 5 minutes to see if I could get the computer to reset - no luck. Any suggestions on where to start?
Many, many thanks,
Re: Kenmore Elite refrigerator Model 596.76533500...
We have a
Kenmore Elite refrigerator Model 596.76533500The water dispenser stopped dispensing water. We changed the filter to see if that will help. It did not. Also, the ice maker eventually stopped making ice. What can we do to find out the cause?

These are computer run items now. If you unplug it for 2 or 3 minutes does it reset itself? If not try pressing refrigerator an ice buttons together. If that does not work the evaporator fan or control panel needs to be replaced. That about all one can do these days other than keeping the air ways clean so fan is clear. But ecen that will not stop these voltage spikes on the line from ruining good appliances.
Klay421 -- Which model Kenmore Elite refrigerator do you have? If you have one of the older manual models, the thermostat is located inside the fridge side. If you have a newer model with digital controls you need to press and hold the the ON/OFF button for 2 seconds until the digital displays for temperature for the Freezer and Refrigerator lights. The Up/Down arrows allows you to adjust the temperature. If you are still having problems, write back. -- SWT
the freezer feeds the refridgerator with cold air, when you open the freezer door,do you hear the fan blowing,if not you need to change the evap fan motor, next take out the second from bottom food bin and touch back wall,if you feel snow or ice you have a defrost problem, you'll have to take off back wall, advance the timer till it clicks into defrost and see if the heater comes on,if so you have a bad timer,if not read out the t-stat and the heater,if there are plug in wires on t-stat unplug them and bypass the t-stat by plugging t-stat wire to heater if heater comes on change t-stat,leave the heater on to help you defrost the ice off of evap coil and use hair dryer to melt ice, hope that helps
okay, you will know it is a defrost problem if you see slushy ice on the back inner panel of freezer, if you do see it then your heaters are not coming on. you need to replace bimetal thermastat and heater.
2. In your freezer do you hear a fan running, you should hear a fan running, if not the air in your freezer is not pushing into the refridgerator, need to replace fan.
There are a lot of things that could be the source of the problem... is there no cooling at all going on in the freezer? Is the back wall of the freezer cold? It could be anything from a fan, to the compressor, to the control board... you need a technician.
I would get on the phone with Sears, and explain the continuing problems you have been having, and they may agree to cover service.
I just went through this with my refridgerator and actually posted one of the questions. Here is what I found ........
In the freezer compartment behind the panel there is an evaporator fan which pulls cold air from the freezer and pushes it up into the refrridgerator compartment. If the fan is not working it is one of three things.. 1) there is so much frost in the fan area the fan blade is stopped and cannot push the cold air into the refridgerator compartment or the air channel is blocked. 2) there is no electricity going to the fan (usually tied to the door switch of the refirdgerator compartment, and 3) the motor is dead and will have to be replaced.
Solution to #1 - defrost but there is another problem in the "frost-free" part of the system which must be addressed or the frost will return and it will happen again in the future.
Solution #2 - check to see there is power to the fan. (most are 110VAC but some are 100VDC. Use a meter and check)
Solution #3 - If there is power, the motor is dead. Replace the motor. Be aware that AC and DC motors are different and replace per manufacture's specifications.
We bought a Kenmore Elite Trio 596.76533500 from Sears in 2006. A few months passed and the Elite broke down. The tech person came out and found that the AC Evaporative Fan was inoperable. It was replaced (part #67003917). A few months later the same thing happened. But before they came out, I spoke to the tech person on the phone who seemed very familiar with the fan. He said that they've had numerous problems with that fan model and would bring out an older-type one that had fewer sensors and that was less prone to failure. The "motor evap" part #2214986 (Whirlpool compatible) was put in and everything has been working since... Hope this helps...
