Question about Projection Televisions

My rca rear projection model P46924 chassis PTK195N4A only ticks when turned on. before it went out it started pulling in on sides leke a pincusion problem and vertical height would stretch about 4". after it warmed up it played fine. i can't find anywhere to get a service manual.i was in repair for 30 yrs.but never worked on rear projection sets and not many rca's.i talked to a friend and he said i would need a chipper check. i have given the chassis a good looking over but nothing looked burnt and no smell.

  • jim_shaw2 Oct 08, 2008

i had already unpluged it and removed the cables overnight and flexed the boards as it ticked--no change

  • jim_shaw2 Oct 08, 2008

are you refering to the smaller board mounted verticaly or the one with the flyback on it?
im also having trouble downloading the service manual.

  • jim_shaw2 Oct 09, 2008

i belive in one of the post i was supposed to be aqble to down load a schematic but wasn't able to. could you tell me where and how?

  • jim_shaw2 Oct 16, 2008

I have the main board out,and in checking it over there are several loose solder joints,1 on the flyback but there is 1 burnt resistor and I wanted to double check the value. It is R14152 and colors apear to read 150 ohms and it is a 1 watt flame proof type. Can you conferm this?

Chipper check is a service program available from RCA to RCS authorized service centers that is used to perform alignments. You should not require this at all. Since the set had other symptoms before it died, that is a clue to the underlying problem. There are some capacitors that fail that can cause this. I will look up the model later and update this with more details.

BTW: A reset will not fix this. There may be some bad solder joints that are contributing to the problem, but at this point, I believe that there are defective components as well.

When nothing looks burnt on the power supply board and all the capacitors and ics are also looking proper.then its quite possible that the components are got quite loosed on the power supply board as there is a glue through which they remains firmness and that glue gets dried up so the components gets loosed on the board and when the board gets heated after some use the glue melts and the components firms on the board.so you just have to do a cold solder on the whole power supply board.and also check for any blown or burnt fuses on the board.

replacement of the board will cost you near to $500.plus service charge.if does not works then the last option is replacing.

but getting the new tv is much preferrable then replacing the board.

Hi,
How old is your TV?
Seems tv has few weak capacitors in deflection circuits.

1. Try this - hold the menu button down for 10 seconds. TV should power up; you will have to turn off front panel buttons on menu.

2. You can also try a hard reset: Unplug TV from AC mains and remove all cables from TV. Wait about 30 minutes and re-plug to AC power and redo the cabling. Switch on the TV and see if it works..

3. Powering down the set or putting it in standby may have allowed the power supply to cool. Weak capacitors often go out of spec when they cool, thus preventing a section of the power supply from firing up properly again. There is a simple trick...just warm the back of the TV with a hair dryer for 5-7 mins after you have unplugged the TV. Look for the little areas of holes in the back panel of TV. Use these as your guide at where to use the hairdryer, but don't hold the dryer too close (say 5-6inches away). (Make sure the dryer is on High heat). If the TV doesn't turn on after you have heated it up (like it tries to come on but then turns off) you need to unplug the TV again, this resets it. And repeat those steps till it works. Resetting the TV after it fails to turn on is the key. Also, just leave the TV on. Don't turn in off. Since it is LCD, it doesn't take much power...only a few bucks extra a month for your utility bill.

4. A circuit board may crack about some of the larger components mounted on it. Try hitting the TV firmly on the side to confirm this. If the picture changes, then you probably have a bad solder somewhere. You can inspect the PCB's for fractures, and then repair them. It may also be poor soldering that has failed. I would be checking for these things first.

If none of these work, then there is an issue somewhere on the power board (usually a short circuit, causing the protection system to take over the tv power management). Also check for leaking coolant from the CRT, which could have shorted something on the board.
Sometimes replacing/disconnecting the front panel (with all the buttons) can resolve the issue. Also check the power cord of the set by wiggling each end where the molded plugs are.

If you still can't diagnose or fix the problem, best get a repairman familiar with this model to take a look..

    Hope that helps!

Also see if you can reseat the 2 ribbon cables between the Power supply/deflection and SSB boards. That may help..

Sorry about that..but do try the procedures outlined...They should work for CRT as well. It could also be a problem with the flyback.

YOU CAN TRY ALL THE FIXES LISTED, BUT FROM PAST EXPEARIANCE THE PROBLEM WILL BE A LARGE HI VOLTAGE CIRCUIT BOARD THAT WILL COST 100's AND YOU MAY OR MAY NOT NEED MORE WORK SUCH AS ALIGNMENT ISSUES ETC. IN THE NED TO REPLACE THE TV IS THE BEST OPTION, I LEARNED THIS THE HARD WAY AFTER A FAILED $400 FIX FOR MUCH THE SAME PROBLEM YOU HAVE. VISIO MAKES A GREAT LCD TV FOR VERY LOW BUCK, GOOD PIC AND QUALITY PRODUCT.

I have a RCA home theatre modle P46924 and im seeing three different colors on the side how can i fix this

I know a very common problem with this set (which rarely has convergence problems).

Look closely where model number is on back and I suspect you will find in tiny print this is a PTK195 chassis.

If so there is a board above the main boards (3 inch wide and about 9 inches long) that has only a few plugs and 4 screws holding it in.

There are on that board if it is there about 10 black diodes---two side by side are much larger than the others. What happens and can be checked with board out is one of the two larger ones is shorted-----there are a few other parts but 95% of the time one of the large diodes is bad-----1000 prv (peak reverse volts at 3 amp and fast switching)

See attached photo of typical diode with band at one end(polarity of band end is positve).

Let me know if questions.

My 52 in

Chirping is usually a problem in 2 areas of this unit. 1st check 3 legged regultor on the right side of the chassis, also 2 small transisters and 2 resisters near and in front of the regulator. RCA has a kit for this problem, the second is check the horizontal output transister is on a separate heat sink along side of the Flyback Transformer, it shorts and pulls down the regulator power supply.
