Question about Hunter 20537 / 20538 The Vista Iron Ceiling Fan
My Hunter ceiling fan is model 20537, but this applies to many other Hunter fan models. When trying to open the canopy to replace the remote control receiver unit, I could not easily open the canopy. It had no visible screws or clips. It had an upper plastic ring, so the apparent solution was to twist it left or right in a circular motion. This did not work either. I could not find the installtion booklet, and was not able to find the information in my internet searches. At long last I learned how to open the canopy, and am posting my own solution here.

Check with stores that sold it and see if they will warranty replacement. I think there is a lifetime warranty, thats why you pay the big bucks for the Hunter name.

Home Depot sells universal remote systems (transmitter and receiver) for around $30 (in Delaware & Pennsylvania) -- don't know price in Chicago).
I'd just replace it. Hunter may be correct that they are the only source for the receiver, but if you get a new transmitter as well, you don't need their receiver. The labor is the same either way.

You just need to wrap it and tuck it .. You might need to cut some of the fan wires shorter so there is not so much bulk under the canopy cover. The fans are shipped with enough wire leads to be able to use a down rod, They can be cut shorter when the fan is being installed.
