Question about Toshiba 57HX81 57" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Horzontal feathering Md l 57HX81 SN. 59009581 CHASSIS 0159 I have severe horizontal feathering at start-up. Especially bad with an non-HD signal. After 15 min warm-up usually pretty good for an hour. Then the picture flashes intermittently. I am using a signal from a HD DVR. Thanks for any help. I am an industrial electronic tech with Ball Corp. I can do board level component replacement. Especially if you tell me what is real heat sensitive. David

It's the signal you are feeding it. If you are using non-HD, and especially non-digital signal to a HD TV it will be very noisey and grainy.

Fix. Tv

This line is due to fault to horizontal sweep section. Replace all the non-electrolytic capacitors with new ones. Replace the horzontal output transistor too. Check this linkhttp://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ to get more details.

Screen not coming on

This Chassis line had a lot of issues with hair-line cracks in the Horizontal Circuit along the right side near the High Voltage Transformer and Heat Sink. It has also had issues with cold solder connections in the Horizontal Drive Circuit especially the Horizontal Driver Transformer. These issues have many times caused a massive Power Supply and Horizontal failures if not repaired.
I hope this helps,

Toshiba 57HX81: Green works but Blue and Red seem to be out.

Do you still have reds? Is the image still clear though discolored? If so you ought to replace the blue bulb which has most likely failed. The part no for the 57HX81 model blue CRT bulb is TOSHIBA     23008753.

57HX81 Toshiba. picture gets squiggly on dvd input

Perhaps 2 things. Does TV get a picture without DVD connected? If so I would bet you have a faulty connection in your signal board where the in jacks are at the back of the TV . Check to make sure cable from DVD are not bad, I have used cables before and got a false positive. Try turning and spinning the jacks once you have a picture.Make sure your signal board is firmly pressed into its slot on the signal board chassis. Thats it for now. Good luck.

HORIZONTAL HOLD

Hello INDIII,

The answer is yes, if all you have to do is to adjust the horizontal hold control (usually located on the back of the TV)

The answer is no (with caveat) if you have to open up the set. This problem occurs when the horizontal oscillator is drifting off its set frequency of 15,750 Hz This can be caused by a component or components changing in value, or the problem could be caused by the loss of or decrease in the amplitude of the horizontal sync pluses within the video signal. Such a loss of amplitude can take place from the output of the Video detector to the Horizontal mixer stage (uses the Video pluses and the Horizontal oscillator to sync the picture). This means that you will be working around a hazardous section of your TV.

The caveat is if you have a background in electronics and you have the proper equipment.
1) schematic diagram of the TV to see where TV test-points are
2) multimeter to measure DC voltages at test points
3) oscilloscope to view waveform patterns in the horzontal section of the TV
4) Signal generator to produce a know good signal into the TV set.
5) Isolation Transformer to connect the TV power plug to to isolate the Tv ground from earth ground and allow proper connectivity for test equipment (plug the unit under test into the isolation transformer and the test equipment into the wall outlet.)

I hope this answers your question,
Thank you,
Shuttle83
