Does the Brother SX-4000 come with Code Caps? Thank you in advance.

I apologize, I am not sure what you mean by "Code Caps" I haven't heard this term used with typewriters before. If you are asking about special characters there are a few. Look at the keys and you'll see a few of them with a GREEN character in it. Hold the CODE key (2 keys left of the spacebar) and press that hey that has the green character on it.If you are looking for the Caps Lock, on this machine they call it SHIFT LOCK (on the third row on the left side of the keyboard).
If neither of these are what you are asking about PLEASE ask the question again with more details.

How do I download brother SX-4000 electric typewriter?

If you are asking how to download to a computer file or a storage device, there is not a way without a major modification to your hardware (commonly known as a HACK to the device). Brother did not include a way to download from memory to a computer file.On the other hand, if you want to print what you have on the LCD screen you are typing in display mode. There are 2 typed of display modes (Line by line, and Auto) The way to print in display mode is;

  1. Press return if you are in Line by line.
  2. Type a complete page with and the machine will add the return when you reach the Right Margin.radarron_1.jpg

To determine what mode you are in, on the right side of the display you will see the operate section (see attached diagram) . If the triangle is pointing up you are in "Auto Return", if it is pointing down you are in "Line by Line" mode. If you don't see a triangle it should type as a normal typewriter (each letter as soon as you type it). To toggle through the modes hold the ALT key and press the OPERATE key. The keys that are activated by the ALT are color coded (same color as the ALT key) and are across the top of the keyboard.

I am sorry to tell you that your machine does NOT have that function.

This is the difference between Shift Lock and Caps Lock.

1) Shift Lock is the traditional upper case used since the oldest mechanical typewriters

2) Caps Lock (what you want) works like a computer, where you get upper case Alphas and numbers.

Brother does include this feature on some models, but I am sorry to say not yours.

Hi i have a Brother SX-4000 electronic typewriter and for some reason when i press shift 2 i get n with a ~ over it instead of the @ symbol that i'm trying to get. Please help.

You are in KB II mode some T/Ws have a slide switch, some have a key that must be used with the code key.

Go to BROTHER.COM, click on support you will find a manual there.

I can not get it into service mode.

There is not a "diagnostic mode" for the neptune washer.
All tests and functionality are done at each setting using the timer (except the tach circuit)
What is the problem you are looking to diagnose??

Margin release on SX-4000 Typewritter

Actually this is incorrect. Move to the Left [Backspace] or Right [Spacebar] depending on which margin you wish to change until it beeps. You hold down [ALT] and press [3] M REL, then move left or right again until you get where you want, then Hold [ALT] and press either [4] L MAR or [5] R MAR.

As a side note the Manual for this Typewriter IS available at Brother's website at

Hope this helps!
