Top Motor 50x50x20mm DC 12V Ball Bearing Fan Fan Kit

93 Convertable top problem (by 2 users)

By Mini Me - usenet poster

Today the top would not go up.
Could hear the relays clicking.
Tested the relays, connection to motor, and wiring.
Cleaned with contact cleaner, everything looked good.
Still no top, motor won't make a sound.
Checked all fuses. Bought the stang used and do not have a manual. I
may have missed the correct fuse can anybody help on this one?
Stange thing is that if I check the voltage to the motor, while holding
down the switch so the relay is energized, I do not get 12v on the motor
connection, I would think I should. That's why I wondering if I missed
the fuse for the motor.
Please help.

Steve

This is a seeming to become a common problem with the rams in the 94-up.
They are loosing the seal on the shaft and
shooting the fluid everywhere.
The rams are not that hard to replace.
You must remove the bottom section of the rear seat, the interior quarter
panel, and the vinyl cover over the motor/pump assy.
The ram is held on by a torx bolt on the shaft side and in order to get to it
the top must be about 1/2 way down.If you do it in a garage,a bunjy cord
attached to the top and roof/garage opener works great to keep it at this
height. The ram body is held into place by a single nut and the whole thing will
drop right out.Be VERY carefull
with the fittings on the ram as the body is aluminum and very easy to cross
thread when putting line on new one. After installing new ram, lift the
motor/pump from its bracket and tip on its side (can put top all the way up at
this point) and remove the rubber plug in the end of the pump and add
either ATF if the original fluid is pink or Hydraulic oil if clear (I have seen
both used in these) raise and lower top several times to get air out of
lines, add fluid till loud growl goes away.If too much fluid is added it will
push rubber plug out,if not enough it will growl loudly.Replacement time is
about 1-1 1/2 hours. To remove seat bottom you will need to insert a screw
driver into a latch
on each side of the seat right at the floor and push in,this will release latch
and you will be able to remove seat bottom.

Wow! What a great set of directions. Makes me think that even *I*
might be able to handle this one. Though I'll probably wait for a day

LOL! Thanks for taking the time to post. I appreciate it.

Other possibility is failure in the hydraulic system which does the
lifting (if the '93 has the same lift mechanism the '95's that is).
My 95 blew a seal on the right side hydraulic cylinder at about 55k
miles. Heard the clicking and the motor whirr. Top didn't go up.
Instead I found all sorts of nasty hydraulic fluid squirting out of
the top of the cylinder where the piston goes in and out. Make sure
you clean that up since it's caustic and will eat paint in a
heartbeat. My ford dealer wouldn't work on it (Koons in Annapolis,
MD) and sent me to a local shop which does custom vans & upholstery.
Paid $350 to have a new hydraulic cylinder installed. Worked for 10
days and the left side died. I was NOT a happy camper. I'm not
spending another $350 on this car right now. :-( So I manually
muscle the darn thing up and down. '

Has anyone attempted replacing the cylinder themselves? How much of
the interior must be disassembled to get at the guts of the thing? Is
it easy to get the fluid back into the system? I'm thinking of
selling this car to get a '69-'72 Red Corvette Convertible with a 454
instead. Only thing holding me back is lack of a backup car - which I
won't have unless I pay off the Mustang beast first, which then makes
a vette payment impossible. No way will I park a vintage vette at the
University student lots, or drive it in the snow / salt.

If you can hear the relays clicking in both the up and down position you have
power up to this point.I would suspect the motor
has failed as they are notorious for this.
