Question about Kenmore Freezer 20.3 cu. ft. Frost Free Upright Freezer

Broke down after 3 years!! Any ideas on what wrong and how to fix it?

I bought the Kenmore 253.24082100 freezer new 3 years ago and all of a sudden the my wife noticed a strong chemical smell in our garage (to me it smelled like fertilizer.) Then the next day the temperature buzzer started going off and we noticed the temp was rising in the freezer and not keeping our food frozen. I called and Sears said the condenser/compressor was the only thing left under warranty but that I'd have to pay $65 to have someone come out and look at it. I'd like to try and fix it myself if it's not too difficult, but I'm not sure what's wrong with it. Does anyone have any ideas? The fan is bloing in the freezer but it's not getting cold. I also noticed that I don't hear the swoosh right after shutting the door anymore. Please email me with any solutions. THanks, Bill poobah88@ahoo.com

Hi Bill,
You will not like this repair at all. It is cheap and easy but usually really gross. So hold your nose and read on.
This time of year we have little visitors in our garages that like to find a warm place to cuddle up. They will crawl into the back of your freezer and find your warm compressor and start looking for places to build a house. While walking around they will eventually walk directly into the condensor fan and and usually they will not die, they will just be stuck in the fan blades. The heat that begins to build up will slowly cook the little critter and you will get a foul smell for a couple of days. Then you will notice the freezer has stopped cooling well. To repair simply remove the rat from the condensor fan and you got it fixed. In some cases the fan can burn out from the jam so you may need to replace it. I always hate to do this job, it is easy but who likes to handle a cooked rat??? Grossss.. Please dont forget to rate me and try to have a nice day.

It looks like a bad ignition switch or capacitor. This is not that expensive. Probably not the compressor. Unfortunately, one small part stops the whole show.have a friend who is a tech look at it.

Kenmore freezer leaking green

It's not refrigerant. Refrigerant would have evaporated straight away. What did you have in the freezer when it went off? It may be refrigerant oil, in which case mop it up with paper tissue and clean the area with detergent. It's no more toxic than any other oil. It's most likely to be excess ice/frosting leeching from inside the cabinet. Again, mop up with tissue paper.

Hello Tim.

Thanks so much for choosing me for my help with your freezer. I believe you are having one of the most common problems with your freezer as most people have.

No one sit around when they have some spare time and says >> Honey, instead of going to the beach this weekend, lets go pull put out the fridge and freezer and clean it.

Sense you bought it about 3 years ago, and it is slowly getting warmer and warmer and you can hear motor working hard, I would bet it needs to be cleaned. I also would bet, that you have not sense new have pulled it out and took back lower cover off and cleaned it.

Assuming I am correct, this is what you do. First unplug the unit. Store food in a another fridge if you can or maybe a neighbors house until you fix this problem. Now, sense it is 55 degrees now, most likely most the food could be spoiled anyway. So your call on the risk of saving that.

Anyway, you unplug fridge/freezer, as the motor is cooling down, you now pull out fridge and take off lower panel on the rear. Sometimes has tabs, screws , hooks etc.... After you get the rear cover off, then you will notice all kinds of junk in there, fir balls, and just down right dirt. Get yourself a shop vac and start vacuuming all the coil area, and anywhere you can get that dirt and build up out. Even if you have a air compressor hose that will reach to blow it out, or a can of compressed air you can get from any computer section and local store. Anyway, you want to clean it, excuse the expression to the point of you can eat off it. Once you are convinced it is clean, then plug it back in, and fire that baby up, and you will most likely notice quieter motor and cooling down back to normal. Please let me know , Of course you will know instantly when you pull cover off back and if you see dirty and caked up, there is your problem for sure. Thanks Again, Mike

Some kind words with a rating of my help would be appreciated if your satisfied.......

I have a Kenmore 5 freezer, model 253.9135180. It's several years old granted but was working fine until 2 weeks ago. I unplugged it because it was clicking every minute or so like it was trying to turn...

Good day,
The clicking sound is the compressor trying to start and can't. The relay is clipped onto the side of the compressor and can be removed by pulling the relay off the compressor once the retrainer clamps are removed.
You can take the relay to most appliance parts houses. They Will be more than happy to test it. If it tests bad, replace it. If not, I'm afraid it is probably an internal problem with the compressor itself, and you will need to call a qualified tech since it will take special tools to test it.

Kenmore freezer deforsted suddenly. Comes on

compressor relay is probably going out...also check the plug in to the wall. A intermittant contact is a matter of following the source to the compressor. start at the plug and through the temp sensor/ t-stat defrost control and down to the compressor. but ususlly the compressor relay is the culprit.

Only one half of my chest type freezer freezes? It is old. Bought at least 18 years ago. Help!

My recommendation is to get rid of this 18 year old freezer as it is costing u a fortune to keep it plugged in. Then ask yourself if you really need an additional freezer at all?? If you do, consider purchasing a new small one that is really energy efficient. You will be way money ahead I assure u.

Kenmore Upright Freezer 253.21741104 Loss of Power

Yes, it does have a control board. It is located under the rear of the freezer near the compressor. There was a service bulletin out a few years ago about the exact problem you are having. I will not be able to find out if your freezer falls under this design change until tomorrow when I get on my computer at the shop.
What is happening is the board has a fault in it that won't allow it to come back on sometimes if the power blinks off and back on. I am not sure if the repair credit is still active but we have changed the control boards on many of these units free of charge as recently as a year ago.
I will reply back when I find out for sure.
