Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Limited or no connectivity to the internet. my setup: the telephone port is approx 30m from where i need internet access. Originally I had a dlink wireless router set up but was connected via cable, now however I need internet on more than 1 pc (dlink wireless does not have a great signal) so, I have added a WRT160N wireless router by attaching it to the dlink modem. Wireless signal is great but internet is virtually non existent. when i attach a laptop to the router with a cable i still get bad internet connection. If i remove the wrt160n router and plug the same laptop into the cable to the dlink modem...internet is fantastic. the wrt160n seems to be the problem...but i have simply run out of solutions, any advise? (telephone outlet ===cable===dlink modem=====cable===pc) this setup works really well but... (telephone outlet ===cable===dlink modem====cable====linksys wrt160n )))))wireless)))pc ) this setup ..no internet and no internet on the following setup (telephone outlet ===cable===dlink modem===cable===lyknsys wrt160n====cable====pc) I hope this makes sense

On which port of the D-link router did you plug the WRT160N router?

Do this setup.

Disconnect the WRT160N from D-link.

Connect a computer to port 1 of the WRT160N. Access the setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 on the address bar. you may need to type in the username and password for WRT160N. on the setup page Change the LAN IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1. save the settings.

Connect a cable from port 1,2,3 or 4 of the D-link router to the Internet port of the WRT160N. turn off everything then turn them on starting from cable modem>D-link >WRT160N then computer.

You should be able to access the internet.

How to configure a wired/wireless home network

Hello,

In this guide I will go over the steps needed to setup a basic home network. In this network, we will have a desktop computer, a wireless laptop, printer, router and cable modem.

g33k4u_0.jpg

*All devices should be turned off at this point*

1) The cable modem which is usually provided by your internet service provider, should be connected to your coaxial cable(broadband internet) that is active, and can be anywhere in your household. This modem can also be for DSL connections(phone line).

*If you only have one device you wish to connect to your home network, this device can plug directly into the modem and you will not need a router*

2) Next, you will need to connect the router to the modem. You will use a Cat5 cable to do this. It is also commonly referred to as a Ethernet cable or patch cable. On the modem, you will see a Ethernet port, plug one end of the cable to this port. On the router, you will see many Ethernet ports. The port you wish to use to connect the modem to the router is usually separated from the other ports and may be labeled (modem or internet). The ports labeled 1-6 for example are your LAN ports and normally for computers etc. So, plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the port labeled modem or internet that is away from the other ports.

g33k4u_1.jpg

3) Now, for each device you wish to have wired network access(computers, laptops, game consoles) you will need to plug an Ethernet cord into each one, and plug the other end into one of the LAN ports on your router.

4) Power on the cable modem, wait 30 seconds then power on the router.

4) Next, you will need to power on your desktop in order to configure the router. Please consult your routers manual in order to do so.

5) Once your router is configured, you should be able to access it from any of your devices and these devices should have access to the internet. If you wish to have wireless access also, you will need to setup wireless security, password and a SSID. Your SSID is the name you give the router, and this is the name that will show up when you search for routers within range of your computer. Below is a picture of a list of wireless access point SSID.

6) At this point there are several ways to connect a printer. For simplicity, you can connect it to one of the computers, and give access to the other computers. The following guide will go over this step,
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Install-a-printer

I hope this guide helps you in your quest to setup a basic home network. There are many factors that come into play and additional steps may need to be taking but this will get you started!

G33k

Where is the wireless switch on the dell vostro 200

Unlike notebook computers, most desktops don't come with wireless networking built in. I can't find any mention on Dell's site that the Vostro 200 has wireless capability, so this computer doesn't have a wireless switch. To use your desktop computer on a wireless network, you'll need to install a wireless adapter. USB adapters are very easy to use since you just have to plug them in. They're not expensive and you can easily find them at retail stores and online.

HAVE TATA INDICOM LG250 MODEM CONNECTED TO MY DESKTOP PC I WOULD LIKE TO CONNECT IT TO MY HP PRESARIO C700 LAPTOP. I HAVE LAN & TELEPHONE CABLE TOO. CAN I CONNECT IT AND ACCESS THE INTERNET?

as long as you have the ports for it yes, are you trying wireless, or a wired connection? depending on how old or new your laptop is you may be able to connect the telephone line right into your laptop, although that would be dial up and very slow so i would recommend using a cat5 cable aka normal internet cable

New hp compaq laptop. unable to access dlink connection. shows that signal is there but says "limited access" or something like that. this set up is in my daughter's house. Anything you can suggest?

This can occur if the network has a password or WEP key or encryption key on it and you either don't have a password entered or you have it miss spelled.

Check with her and or the person who setup her network for the key.

I dont know haow to connect Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster WRT54GS - wireless router

  1. Connect your modem to the Internet port of the router. Your computer needs to be connected to one of the 4 Ethernet ports at the back of the router.
  2. Access the router's setup page by launching Internet explorer and typing 192.168.1.1.
  3. It will ask for a username and password. Leave the username blank and password is admin.
  4. Once your in the setup page, set "Internet connection type" with what your ISP requires you to have.
  5. If you have cable ISP, usually it is "Automatic Configuration-DHCP."
  6. But if you have DSL ISP, then it will be PPPoE. You need to know your username and password from your ISP.
  7. Better yet, verify your Internet connection type from your Internet service provider.
Hope this helps!

I have a cable modem, Motorola SB5101, Nd need to connect my linksys wireless router.

If this is a first install of a brand new Linksys router:
Just plug your cable modem to the back of your linksys router's internet port, then plug a computer to Port 1 on your router, type http://192.168.1.1 in your internet browser on the computer connected to Port 1, you will access the setup page of your linksys router (leave the user name field blank and type admin as password)
Now you can go to http://www.cas411.com/ShowArticle.aspx?ID=68 to setup your wireless securely, you do not want to just leave it at its default settings, as anybody could then use your internet access or worst, check what you are doing on your computer.
Let me know if you need more help!
