Question about IBM Thinkpad T20 Notebook
I have a IBM ThinkPad T20 and I want to hook up my LAN with my IBM ThinkPad T40. The T40 works fine because I had it hooked up to a desktop through LAN. The two ports that don't work on my T20 is the Modem and LAN Ports. When I plug the LAN cable in the back the LED green light comes on and have hooked to my T40 and the T20 would say Limited or no connective while the T40 says Unidentified Network . The T20 has Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 soon to be 3 and my T40 has Windows Vista Home Basic. And the Modem says no dial-tone. I went under Control Panel and Modem and clicked test communication with modem and it says all drivers installed. I even went under My Computer, System and Properties and I have ThinkVantage on it so it auto downloads the right drivers for it and everything is installed right. right now im using a PCMCIA Modem card on it.
Wow, a lot of information but I'm unclear as to what you are trying to do.
Are you connecting the T20 directly to the T40 using a cat5 cable and then trying to access the internet on the T20 via the modem?
Connecting the two computer together using a normal cat5 will not work, you need to use a crossover cable otherwise you are connecting the send to the send and the receive to the receive.
You can also use a hub, a switch or a router if you have any of those on hand.
As for the modem, I suggest you unplug the telephone line from the modem and plug it into a phone and see if you can hear a dial tone. If you cannot hear a tone either the extension is bad (replace) or you outlet is defective. If you can hear a tone, the modem card may be defective.
