Re: HP deskjet printer 5550
I had the same problem, the most stressfree (and cheapest in the long run) fix I found was:
Get a Canon MP520, it's super fast for an inkjet, the brand name Canon ink cartridges are much larger in (ml) ink, it comes with FULL ink cartridges, not starters with little in, and has Vista drivers( XP too). The color in is in individual cartridges C, Y M (they don't all get used at the same rate) so you will potentially save lots of money. A Canon brand Black cartridge for $13 prints about twice as many pages as the HP $30 cartridge ... you do the math.
Oh yeah, it's a scanner and fast color&bw copier too.
$129 at walmart (the cost of about 4 HP cartridges) I am confident that you will never buy another HP printer.

Sounds like the working cartridges are badly clogged. Is the new cartridge HP brand or an "internet special"? Try HP originals and see if the machine still works ( I imagine it will). If not, then yes the machine is probably and the end of its life.
Hi, The first thing you need to do is make sure you have the correct driver so that you can re-install your printer. Then you need to go to your Start Menu and select Printers and Faxes. Delete any printers that you don't use or no longer have, plus any instances of the Deskjet 5550. Go into your Start Menu and select All Programs. Look for the Deskjet 5550 and put your mouse on it. Look for the Uninstall link then select it. Once it has finished uninstalling the program restart your computer. Insert the CD that came with your printer and follow the instructions. Your printer should now be re-installed and working. I hope this helps you solve your problem. Good luck!
you need to install the 64 bit version of the drivers. Try browsing your cd and look for 64-bit drivers. If not you will find the drivers in the site , here is a link to the 64 bit version of the vista drivers, download the driver that suits your printing needs (PCL or postscript, depends on fonts, I would go for PCL if your don't know)
Since Hp have Vista driver to your printer...to install the driver...do not plug the printer...install the driver that you downloaded (run the program as Administrator)..after you install, if the installation ask for restart..restart your computer...after restart and the whole system finish his task on loading driver and dll ..then plug in your printer...it will pop up message found new hardware. click next and choose automatic find the driver.
what Cable are you using to connect? USB a and b? parallel port to USB? if this you need to download the driver too.
This will not cost You all you have to do is search the internet for your driver for Windows vista The best Place to do this would be the HP website do a google search for your model number .. you will get the drivers
