Hello! One of the channels in your unit has shorted output transistors and is sending about 60 volts towards your speakers. If your unit has an output chip ( I don't ever remember seeing an Onkyo with a chip though...all discrete transistors ) it is shorted. Your unit is well worth repair. Onkyo is an execellent unit. Please rate this solution! Thankyou!

Can you use an Onkyo RC-771M remote control to operate Onkyo receiver TX-SR502 ?

Unfortunately, the RC-771M remote doesn't control the TX-SR502. It will only work with these Onkyo models: TX-NR1008 and TX-NR808. The RC-567M is the one for the TX-SR502; replacement remotes that are exact replacements are still available from various places including Amazon.com .

Since the TX-SR502 was released in ~2004, that replacement remote probably won't control other devices that were released in 2004 or later. Onkyo changed its IR code programming before the TX-NR1008 was released in ~2010 and the RC-771M can't communicate with the older receiver. The manuals for the receivers listed above are still available from Onkyo on the product page under the Downloads tab.

I wish that I had better news for you.

When connecting optical inputs there is no audio output

You have to assign each digital input.

Register and download the manual for free at retrevo.com

Search the document for "assign".

No sound coming out of speakers something is wrong with the receiver

check if it goes to protection mode on power on. see to it that speaker selector switch is set.

Is your speakers connected properly?

Is your music source ok?

Do you hear a click after you switch on the power? the click indicates that the time-on delay transfers the amps output to the speakers which prevents thumps going out to the speakers.

Once it goes to protection mode you need to have it serviced. This is due to a fault in one of the amps and that it protect the speakers from further damage.

Protection mode

you have to verify your connection cause if you are a short circuit in your different output or input the protection mode is on. it's an internal security
first disconnect all your output speakers, and restart your amplifier if the protection mode is on again try to disconnect all your input device and restart your amplifier, the protection mode should be off, so after connect one device after one to check who makes your protection mode on
;)

Amp Protection Mode

from LANCE P: I fixed it. Be sure that all your speaker connections are perfect. No element frays that can arc, no +/- problems, no single barely connected wire. My problem was volume sensitve and I evidently had one + wire that was loose in the back. I corrected it and ran it all day with surround and good volume with no problems. So diligently check ALL YOUR SPEAKER CONNECTIONS, both in the back of the unit and at your speakers
