Hi,
I assume you want to turn on your son's device with this ATX PSU.

here is the 20 pin configuration.
which gives you an idea of which pins could be used.

Also make sure to switch "on" the PSU (ATX100-5) by connecting the PIN 14 (Green) to any of the Ground PINs (black)

You can use Ground and any of the 5V PINs (red) for the researcg device.

As long as you're not talking about hooking it up to anything else, as in a hobby project, then the best thing to do is go out and get yourself a power supply tester. Office Depot still sells Antec ones in my city for under $20, and I recently bought one or two over eBay, direct from China, for under $4--shipping incl--each!
You just plug the tester up to the PS, plug the PS into the wall outlet, turn it on, and ...there you go!
Just one word of warning--be careful with Bestec power supplies--nothing personal against the company itself, but they should all be replaced before they damage your computer. I never worked on any eMachine with one of these power supplies, which had a hardware-related problem, where there wasn't damage to the motherboard due to their Bestec power supplies. They are not properly 'fused' to protect your computer against spikes, surges, etc.

How do I check my bestec atx-250-12e power supply with volt meter

It's hard to do with a volt meter. What you would be better off doing is either ordering a cheap power supply tester online, and test yourself with that, or take out the power supply and take it to your local pc repair shop and ask them to check it for you. There are 12V outputs, 5V outputs and 3.5V outputs, and any of them could be bad, so that is why I say using a voltmeter is harder than using an actual power supply tester.
Let me know if this solves your problem.

EMachine T6420 will only turn on to start the fans and then immediately turns back off - has Bestec ATX-300-12E power supply - do you think that's the problem

These computers have had problems with the mother board. I had one the same problem, and I did research on the INternet. Best advice.... find a replacement board which will fit this box. Then you will have to re-install the operating system with the cdrom. You may be able to repair the system.
More than likely the power supply is not the problem, but the board is suspect more than anything.

Want to use the atx-300-12z as a hobby power supply. Need 12vdc.

You're asking for a fire or just burning out the power supply. But,at your own peril, check the yellow wires for 12v or buy a power supply test adapter from ebay. It bypasses the power switch usually done by the motherboard & will fire up the power supply like it was connected to a board. Then test the wires for 12v. Should be any yellow wire, red is 5v. Green is 3.3 or 3v.

Bestec atx-250-12z rev d hp model 5187-1098 pc will not start up when pushing button on front of machine green led on back of p/s flashes with power cord plugged in. does this indicate a p/s failure?

I have already replaced mant Bestec ATX-250-12E power supplies because they have an internal failure. Consider yourself lucky if the thing doesn't power up your computer because it has a problem of imposing the +12 volt line onto the +5 Volt line then blowing out the mother board. Sometimes you aren't so lucky because once the damage is done then it is to late to just simply replace that piece of junk. I was lucky with my daughters E-Machine because if she tried pressing the start switch on the front of her computer it would sometimes come on and sometimes not. She just mentioned this to me and I immediately replaced that Bostec ATX-250-12E before it could do any damage to her computer. If anyone has an older E-Machine or an older Gateway machine then it would be a good idea to see if it uses that Bostec-ATX-250- 12E. If it does then go order another power supply, anything but a Bostec, and instead of a 250 watt order a 300 watt or better. I hope that this has helped those that might have this problem before it destroyes *********** boards. Marty
