Kitchenaid KSRA22ILSS02 fridge won't get below 41 degrees
Freezer is fine, the fridge is the problem. Even if I set the digital thermostat as low as it will go (33 degrees), fridge stays at 41. I've moved things away from the fan at the top of the fridge, and I've dusted underneath the unit. I've experimented with different thermostat settings but nothing seems to change it.

Many residential refrigerator / freezers are designed to work at temperature considerably above above freezing. Most modern refrigerator / freezer have a single electric thermostat - located in the fresh food compartment. This lone thermostat will control the compressor to keep the fridge (fresh food) section at the desired temperature (usually between 34 - 38 degrees F). The freezer will get colder regardless of how cold it is already whenever the fridge thermostat turns the compressor on.
Now that you see how the thermostat works, let's look at what happens when the fridge is placed in an unheated space - like a garage. In winter time, the temperature can drop considerably below 38 degrees. If the outdoor temperature remains cold enough, for long enough - it will affect the thermostat in the fridge. The temperature inside the fridge could drop below 38 degrees, preventing the thermostat from telling the compressor to turn on. Meanwhile, the temperature in the freezer compartment slowly rises from the normal -10 to 0 F degrees. It will continue to rise until it is the same temperature as the fresh food compartment or until the thermostat in the fresh food compartment tells the compressor to turn on again. This means the freezer contents will thaw.
If the temperature in the garage is even in the 40 to 50 degree range, the loss of cold in the fridge may not happen often enough to keep the compressor coming on often enough to keep some freezer items frozen solid - such as ice cream. Remember, water freezes at 32 degrees F, other products may require lower temperatures to remain frozen, and could thaw at 28 or other temperature.
Try replacing the circulating fan first. If it's not turning, it's more than likely bad. However, the fan might not be your only problem. The problem may lie with the icemaker. The icemaker is essentially the brain of the unit. It tells when to cool, when to defrost and when to maintain temp. Your icemaker may be stuck in defrost mode.
Please check your thermostat and compressor.
You need to set thermostat correctly. Put the set at middle or a bit colder.
- You may have insufficient refrigerant
- Low oil
- Dirty evaporator.
Please observe both items above and get them fixed.
Hello, This problem is going to be the cold control, this can be located in the control panel inside the fridge. This part is also called the thermostat. What is happening here is it has opened and the freezer is getting to cold which is making the fridge too cold. This is why the food in your fridge is freezing. You should replace the cold control and you will be all set. Mike
Assuming that your fridge is set at max thermostat setting, and still it cools to 8 degrees only. It only mean one thing, and that is have your refrigerant level check, and have it loaded. E-mail to us your comments.
one thing to check for if you whant the freezer to colder the fresh food compartment will not go down i temperature because you stre blocking the air floe lower the freeezer control knob thanks from gilles
Generally speaking it is the refrigerator control that controls the compressor operation. Refrigerator is cooled by air from the freezer. When the refrigerator gets down to its designed temperature it shuts off the compressor. The freezer control determines how much air is allowed to flow into the refrigerator section and there-by controls the freezer temperature.
