Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

I recently replaced the drum bearings on my machine and damaged the outer stainless steel tub, it now has 2 small perforations due to my over-enthusiasm in replacing the spider and is now leaking. What is the best type of product to use to temporarily seal the drum to enable use of the washer?

Hi, thanks for the help. I think the drive shaft of the drum was bent which led to the spider piercing the drum in several places when it was running again. I have now purchased a replacement.

    Thanks again.

I have had this problem and cured it by drilling out as small as possible and fitting a small nut and bolt with fibrev washers each side. it worked and is permanent. otherwise just use a silicon sealant

Hello: I have a Whirlpool GHW9400PL0 front loading washer. When I look under the front seal looks like an inner stainless tub inside a plastic tub. The edge of the plastic tub is all chewed up and machine...

if you contact whirlpool they might help but the bearings that help that stainless steel drum spin smoothly are gone and because its bounced around a bit it shredded the plastic tank its about $400 for the parts to do this job and every single part comes off and back on it takes experienced guys that do them every day about 2 hours of struggle and pain to do it. i would highly reccomend a new machine in this case.not worth it

Front seal not supporting drum, drum flops violently, doesn,t leak. seal wont stay on drum.

it sounds like you may have tub bearing issues or your suspension springs or shocks may be missing or broken. The front seal is just there for sealing, thats its sole purpose.
Basically there is two parts, the inner stainless steel drum and the outer plastic tub housing. Reach inside and see if you can move the inner stainless drum up and down any significant amount? If so the bearings are most likely shot. If its pretty solid but the outer plastic tub moves, its most likely a suspension issue. You can take off the top to get a much better view of the components.

Loud scraping sound from bottom of tub while spinning. GE spacemaker laundry WSM2700.

one of two possibilities here ,either you have a coin in the drum that has got in through small gap at the front ,of the bearing has gone and the drum has dropped catching on the outer drum.to find out and hopefully remove a coin you will have take the back off the machine ,then remove the belt ,and on the back of the drum is a big clamp ,undo this clamp and remove the drum .but some machines have the clamp at the front ,If this is the case then you will need to undo the drive pulley at the back ,remove the pulley and screw the nut back on flush with end of the thread use a wooden block and tap the shaft to push it through the bearing. No quick solution here just donkey work iam afraid.

I have a zanussi washer/dryer but lately its making so much noise !! its driving me nuts please tell me what it could be ?? thanks

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. If your washer is a front load washer then check these things if it is making noise--
Bellows
The bellows is a rubber sleeve that seals the suspended outer tub to the stationary cabinet front at the tub opening. Its purpose is to provide a water tight opening into the tub that can be sealed by the cabinet door, yet allow flexibility for the oscillation of the tub during the wash and spin cycles.
Outer Tub Assembly
The outer tub assembly is supported by two suspension springs and stabilized by two air shock assemblies. A cement counter weight is mounted to the front of the outer tub by screws. A counterweight is molded into the rear half of the outer tub. These counterweights prevent excessive oscillation of the entire suspended assembly during an unbalanced spin cycle.
Spin Basket Assembly
The spin basket is constructed of stainless steel. The circumference of the basket is perforated to allow water to flow through it as it revolves. A heavy steel shaft is pressed into the spin basket support which is then bolted to the basket. The spin basket assembly is entirely supported by two ball bearings pressed into the rear of the outer tub. A large drive pulley is mounted to the free end of the shaft that extends through the rear of the outer tub. There are three plastic vanes mounted to the spin basket to aid in the washing action during the wash cycle. The rotation of the spin basket provides both the washing action during the wash cycle, and water extraction during the spin cycle.

High pitch "jet engine" noise--A certain amount of motor whine is normal during the spin cycle.

Rattling and clanking noise--
• Foreign objects such as coins or safety pins may be in drum or pump. Stop washer and check drum. If noise continues after washer is restarted, objects may be in pump.
• Belt buckles and metal fasteners are hitting wash drum. To prevent unnecessary noise and damage to drum, fasten fasteners and turn items inside out.

Squealing sound or hot rubber odor-- Washer is overloaded. Do not overload washer. Stop washer and reduce load.

Thumping sound— Heavy wash loads may produce a thumping sound. This is usually normal. If sound continues, washer is probably out of balance. Stop washer and redistribute wash load.

Vibrating noise--
• Washer is not resting firmly on floor. Move washer so it rests firmly on floor. Adjust leveling legs. NOTE: Some shaking of the washer is normal without moving across the floor. See INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for details.
• Shipping bolts and foam blocks have not been removed during installation. See INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for removing shipping bolts and foam blocks.
• Wash load unevenly distributed in drum. Stop washer and rearrange wash load.

Please do rate the solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Rylee

Noisy Spin Cycle

If the bearings are out, you don't have to replace the entire outer tub. You can replace just the bearings. I have done this on a few machines already, and they work without flaw now. Cost of replacing the bearings, parts and labor is going to be $250 to $300 depending on where you are and barring any other problems such as a perforated boot. I do this in the D/FW area.

During a spin cycle what would cause the basket to be out of balance on every washload, even when there is not a balance issue. Basket acts loose and bangs against inside of machine

sounds like your bearings are excessively worn, open the machine door and hold the drum (stainless steel bit) try to lift this up if it moves freely without the tub moving (outer bit usually plastic or steel without holes) your bearings are gone. or the drum has broken off the wields that hold it to the shaft.
its sometimes cheaper to buy a new machine than repair the bearings and if the drum is loose it will eventually break something inside.

You have a big problem here. It sounds like the bearings on the drum shaft are going. this is over $400 for the back half of the outer drum and you have to be a very good mechanic to get it all apart. I currently have mine apart for the same problem which I verified by opening the door of the washer and lifting the inner stainless steel drum up and down with the machine off, of course. The tub is supported by two large ball bearings on the shaft that is supporting the stainless steel drum, and they don't sell just the bearings and seal, only the back half of the drum. If it has gotten bad enough to rub against the front half of the outer tub, it will probably have to be replaced also, about $120. This was probably caused by overloading the washer or washing something that was unbalanced and heavy; this destroys the seal between the inner drum and the heavy bearings, also not available separately, and lets water into the bearings in the aft outer tub which support the inner tub shaft. If you want to try to take this apart to verify, try looking at Whirlpool consumer services technical education group presents #L-68, Job Aid Part No. 8178076. I found it online. It has detailed instructions how to take this machine apart if you are a technician or a talented amateur, as I am. Good luck.

Whirlpool Duet Washer (GWH9100LW1) Bangs Loudly during spin

how old iss your washer? do you have an owners manual. because usually there is an extended factory warrenty on the tub and basket. the only thing you would have to pay for would be the labor. Call whirlpool if you do not have a owners manual to find out. the bearing is compressed in the tub. does it sound like an airplain taking off in your house that's usually it.

Rear tub bearing replacement

The shaft on the spinner basket may have worn and formed a groove, or, if the bearing seal was leaking, the shaft may be stuck because of rust. The best way I know how to get the spinner basket out, is to try spraying the shaft with a lubricant like penetrating oil, or WD-40 and letting it sit a while. Allow the lubricant to settle into the area where the shaft seats into the bearing. If this does not provide you with any luck, place the outer drum face down on something to elevate the spin basket up off the floor. I suggest using a couple of saw horses, or blocks of wood. Allow the outer shell to rest on supports, leaving the spin basket free. Place some padding or old towels on the floor underneath the basket. Take a mallet (I prefer a rubber mallet, as it tends to be less abusive) and tap on the end of the drum shaft. The spin basket should pop free and drop from the tub shell. I hope this helps you.

PS You only have to elevate the basket and tub off the floor enough to allow the spin basket to drop free of the tub. About a foot is all I would recommend. Make sure you inspect and clean the spin basket shaft once you get it removed. Some very fine emery paper is what I would recommend to make sure the shaft is not scored or have any rough areas. DO NOT use any electric sanders or dremils for this! It should be clean and smooth before re-installing. If you cannot get the basket free, or if you do, and the shaft is damaged, you may consider replacing it as well. Placing a damaged shaft into a new bearing may not seal properly.
