I have a Dell laptop Latitude D 830 a little approx. 1 year old. The left side of my screen has gone dark, as though a light burned out.

  • lucienber Oct 08, 2008

  • lucienber Oct 08, 2008

Thanks for you help. I guess I will just have to live with it or perhaps bring it to the shop.

Hi,

Your brief description of a desktop screen problem could mean two things:

  • monitor problem (most likely); or
  • video card problem (unlikely).
Confirmation could be performed by trying:
  • another monitor on the desktop PC;
  • the monitor in question on another computer.
If it were the monitor, approach would be different if it is an:
  • LCD type; or
  • a conventional CRT type.
Having said that:
  • If it were an LCD monitor, possible problem could be the backlight CCF (cold cathode florescent) lamps;
  • If it were a conventional CRT type, then possible problem with the screen control (back of FBT) or worst case scenario, a defective tube.
What is the brand and model of the monitor and/or the PC itself.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back as requested, how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Ahh, so not a desktop but a laptop. It would be most likely a failing CCF lamp.

also what is the brand and model of your device?

  • Ekse Oct 08, 2008

If you plug the laptop to a external monitor, the picture should be fine, so I suspect the backlight is having issues. can you see anything on the black area? if you don't see anything at all, even under light, its possible that your lcd is broken. hows your warranty?

  • Ekse Oct 08, 2008

ok, in that case the problem is with the backlight about one year old, you should have warranty on it, warranty should cover fixing this problem contact dell or your reseller

Let me know if you need anything else,

Proview monitor problems

Hi Lori,
You're correct, LED's do not blow out like other lights, but they do go bad. It sounds like the left side LED has burned out.
You can try to hook it up to another computer and see if it does the same thing. If it's still dark, the moniitor needs to be replaced.
If it works on a different computer, reconnect it to your Moms computer and make sure that it is securely fastened to the video connector on the Motherboard, or Video Card if one has been installed. Also, check to see if it securely attached to the back of the monitor.
Hope this helps,

How can I dim my screen?

Locate the Fn (Function) key on your keyboard. It may be on the bottom left side with dark blue letters. Locate the two "brightness" keys near the top of the keyboard. These will be in the "F" keys, possibly if F6 and F7. They should have little sun pictures or something similar to indicate brightness. Hold down the Fn key while pressing F7, or whichever "F" key your laptop uses to increase brightness. Tap F7 repeatedly until you reach the desired brightness. Fn must be held down as you continue to tap. Hope this helps.

Can u uninstall emachines then reinstall so that the colors are right

1) Right-click on an empty area of your desktop screen.

2) Left-click on Properties at the bottom of the list.

3) Left-click on the Settings tab.

4) In the middle on the right side; What does it state for Color quality?
It should state - Highest (32 bit)
If not left-click on the blue down arrow to the right of this box.
(Color quality box)

Left-click on Highest (32 bit)
Now go below to the right, and click on Apply.
Then go to the bottom left, and click on OK.

Still no change?
Go to your monitor, and monitor settings. See if the colors are set right.

Still no?
If the monitor is a flat LCD screen, see if there is another KNOWN to be good monitor cable, (From another computer?), to use for a test.

If you are using an older CRT monitor, it may be at the end of it's 'Life Cycle'.
(Looks like a small TV)

Black screen

Hi,

Sounds like a vertical problem if the center line is left to right. Chances are that it's the Vertical IC. If giving the TV a light tap at the sides causes a momentary opening, then it is a cold solder condition on the same IC.

Both of course would require opening the TV and performing the necessary repair. You should be familiar with components and electronic circuitry as well as soldering.  Should you be not that comfortable, perhaps your best bet is to seek the services of a qualified TV technician.

Good luck and kind regards.
