Question about Magellan RoadMate 1412 Car GPS Receiver

Battery question I can not use my roadmate unless I am plugged into my car cigarette plug. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my gps

    Sorry, just saw this.

I posted the same problem. I just bought this last week. It powered up once as portable, but now it won't. Works fine when plugged in. Battery is reading full.

I'm going to return it. I think it's defective. It's supposed to run as a portable gps also.

I found there are select 120v AC adapters that will work on Magellan GPS. When a working 120v or 12v adapter to mini USB adapter is plugged into the unit, the battery bars will be 'scrolling' and therefore charging.

When your adapter, or even USB cable from your computer, is plugged into the GPS unit, and the battery goes to FULL, it is NOT CHARGING. The battery bars must be SCROLLING for the unit to charge. In this case, get a different adapter until it works.

When you charge it does not work

I have the same unit, and I even bought a new battery for it. After the resudal charge on the new battery wore off, it would not charge.
I now use it exclusively plugged into the cigarette lighter. When I need to update the maps, or the software, I use the USB cable.

I am still trying to get the tech manuals on it.

Hope that helps.

My Magellan Roadmate doesn't work anymore when I plug it into my cigarette lighter. It says the battery is low and it is shutting down. The unit did not come with a battery charger so I am confused about...

there could be a few reasons why this is happening....

there should be a light on the car charger that comes on when you plug it in, if it isnt on when not plugged in to the gps, but while plugged in to the lighter...either the lighter fuse is blown, or the charger is defective.

if the light is on, on the charger and it still wont stay powered on, it probably has a bad usb port (very common on this model) but it could also mean the charger (if not factory) is not compaible with the unit.

another way you can try and charge it (if you determine the chargers at fault) is to hook it up to your computer via the usb cord that should of been supplied with your unit.

HERE is your manual..it will show you the differant charging options..there is also updates on that page if you need them

let me know if you need more help.

Magellan RoadMate won't compute if connected to power

unplug the charger, then turn the 1200 on, once its fully booted, hold the power button for 15 seconds..the screen will go blank after a few seconds, but continue to hold it for 15 seconds.

now, with the charger plugged in and unit off, press and hold the power button for upto 7 seconds or till it starts.

if that fails, let me know and i can tell you something else to do.

My magellan roadmate 1212 will not stay on unless plugged into

if its not charging the battery, the meter will say full even though the battery is dead..its a very common problem with alot of gps with the usb as a charging port. my solution is if this is still under warranty, i would send it back to magellan or where ever you bought it, because sooner or later the usb port is going to totally fail and wont even start up if plugged in and your going to be left with an expensive paper weight.

look in the tip of the DC charger and see if the fuse has blown. This is usually the case.
Be warned! starting the car with the GPS plugged into DC can blow your SIIRF chip... no more satellites! and an expensive repair. be thankful it was the fuse this time

My Magellan Roadmate 1412 does not seem to charge. I cannot use the device unless it is plugged into a wall outlet or car charger. Does this model not have a battery? Please help. Thanks!

does it appear to be charging when its plugged in....go to the system folder then the power option..the power bar should be moving left to right...if its all green and its not scrolling left to rigth , its receiving power but not charging. possibly because the charge port is damaged or the battery is either shot or disconnected.

Won't work unless plugged in

no, sounds like the internal battery is not functional. Try and get a replacment at the store you bought it at (it would be quicker) or you can send it in to Garmin as this is under warranty.

Magellan Roadmate 700 does not power on

Hello, Rafster! Cigarette lighter plug problems are not uncommon, and - hopefully - this is the source of your problem. Because the green LED on your plug is lit, it would suggest that the FUSE inside is okay. Still, it's worth checking! The plug is easy to open, and the fuse easy to inspect/replace. IF the fuse is okay, the cord itself or the plug end that attaches to your Roadmate could be damaged. In order to determine this, you would have to check for voltage at the output end. But, you'd need a circuit tester and a wee bit of electronics knowledge to test it. If you don't have access to a tester, then the easiest test is to simply purchase a NEW cigarette lighter cord. You can get them at most retail discount stores (BestBuy; Circuit City; WalMart; etc.); RadioShack; or directly from Magellan. They're generally less than $10.00!
