Question about Dryers

MDE9606AYW Maytag Dryer

Just changed rollers and belt. Went ok...until it ran awhile. My wife informed me that when she pushes the button to start, it's making the "start" buzzer-type noise longer and louder....now, it seems to do it for 3-4 seconds before the dryer takes off. Finally after a few pushes it started, but stopped and smelled of burning. I unplugged and checked, but couldn't find any burnt components.

I checked:
wall voltage - ok
both thermal fuses - ohm'd out fine
reassembled, and it started, but still had the excessive "start" noise.
I also removed and ohmed the start switch. It seemed "springy," and was "short" when pressed, "open" when released on the ohm meter.
Could this switch still cause this problem, perhaps getting "latched," or engaged too much, similar to a car starter?
I've also heard that the motor has a thermal cutoff, and perhaps that's what stopped it earlier. Could the switch somehow stay engaged too long to activate the thermal cutoff in the moter? I doubt it...but Any tips?

The start button activates a realy inside the control panel
the relay latches to supply heavy current to motor and heater, until door switch or timer switch break the latching circuit
If relay is on its last legs, it could be causing delay in starting, not closing secondary
the relay is represented by the dashed switches at the right of this maytag wiring diagram, note that it has no relevance to physical position of components

I HAVE REPLACED A 3 PRONG (PLUG) DRYER WITH THE MAYTAG MDE96006AYW 4 PRONG DRYER. I'VE INSTALLED A 4 PRONG RECEPTACLE; HOWEVER THE WIRING FEED (12/2) HAS ONLY 3 WIRES....BLACK/RED/WHITE. I BELIEVE THE WHITE IS NEUTRAL (OR) GROUND AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THE NEUTRAL AND GROUND CAN BE JUMPED TOGETHER TO PROVIDE FOR THE FOURTH (L SHAPED) PRONG....?

THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSE,
MICHAEL

Dryer was stored for several years, when hooked up drags and sounds as if the belt is dragging. Takes a while to spin if load is very heavy.

If it was me I would oil the rollers and idler. To do so you must remove the front and get the drum out. It might not hurt to clean her up real good. You might find some spare change. My home videos

I guess I wasnt clear enough. The dryer works ok, except for the rattling sound now. It will start when i push the start button, it heats, and dries the clothes. Just noisy where before the flow sensor went off, it was pretty quiet.

When I push the start button, you can hear it try to start tumbling but it doesnt move. I have a maytag model # MDE9606AYW

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANY WORK ON IT.
Sounds like your problem may be a broken belt, or the belt may have slipped off of the motor pulley, or idler arm pulley.
If you have to check/replace your drum belt and if you have a front loading machine.
Remove the electrical console that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer. Be real careful not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch or other connections.
Remove the lint filter screws and filter.
Then remove the top of the dryer.
Note: Some of the tops tilt backwards and do not have to be removed completly.
Remove the front of the machine, this will expose the belt and drum, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm bracket with pulley, and motor with pulley. Pay attention to the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt and drum.
Sometimes the belt will slip off of the idler arm or motor causing the drum not to turn.
While you have the drum out, I would recommend that you lubricate the drum rollers at the shaft of the roller with a good grade of machine oil like 3 in One oil. This will save you a problem later with the rollers getting noisy, also check your drum rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them this will cause a noise like a thumping type noise. You will need to replace the drum rollers if they have flat spots on them.

Maytag Dryer Model #LDE 4916 ACE. Dryer won't start

Sorry, no reset button. If it ran a bit without the belt, it may have overheated and blown one of the thermal fuses. You can find schematics and diagrams at

Good luck.

When I push the start button, the unit just buzzes or hums.

You have a broken drum belt. The hum you hear is the motor spinning at high speed.
