Cant switch off!

Pull the AC plug, remove the battery. You didn't post the Make, model of Laptop or the OS you are using? Reboot, open Control Panel, select Power Options, select High Performance, open Advanced Power settings/Change power plan, Set Hibernate and Sleep to Never, set advanced power settings to your preference, always shut down and unplug when not in use. Remove battery when using on AC power for extended periods.

How to enable hibernation in Windows XP

Hibernation is a low-power mode that laptops use when they are idle in order to save power. A hibernating computer can come back up to ready a lot quicker than a computer that is completely shut down, but it only uses marginally more power while it is hibernating.

To enable hibernation, open the Power Options applet in the Control Panel. Click on the Hibernate tab (the farthest one on the right) and check the box next to "Enable hibernation." Beneath this box you will see the amount of disk space required to use hibernation. (This amount is typically about the same as the amount of RAM you have installed, because when the computer hibernates, everything in RAM is written to the hard drive.) If you do not have enough free hard drive space, you won't be able to use hibernation; delete some old programs or files that you no longer need in order to free up some more room.

Once you have enabled hibernation and clicked Apply, you can tell Windows when to use hibernation. Go to the Advanced tab (still in Power Options). Under the "Power buttons" heading, there are settings for different actions, such as closing your laptop's lid or pressing the power button. If you want your computer to hibernate when any of these actions are performed, just choose Hibernate from the drop down list. You can also make your computer hibernate manually by choosing Hibernate from the shut down options (Start menu > Shut Down).

Your changes will take effect as soon as you click Apply or OK.

My computer still functioning even its shutdown already

have you tried to hold the power button down for 5 seconds? if that doesn't work, it's possible that when you click the shut down the last option used was the hibernate option. when you click the orb click the arrow pointing to the right next to the power indicator and make sure it's set to shut down and not hibernate

Toshiba terra went into hibernation and will not boot

I find extensive use of the hibernation eventually corrupts window files until it will not start. The best option now is reload your operational system for a fresh install and disable this function, select power options and click hibernate "top right" and make sure box is unchecked, if not! uncheck and click apply and okay.

I have a Thinkpad t60. For the past few days it won't go into hiberation when I close the lid. It just stays on and consumes the battery.

I have seen this issue before with my T60. It seemed to be related to not having restarted my laptop in a while. I used to use hibernate rather than shutting down my laptop for weeks at a time. Actually restarting my laptop seemed to get hibernate to work again.

In addition, you can check to see if for some reason the hibernate option has been disabled.

In Win XP (Win 7 is very similar):
  1. Click Start and select Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Power Options.
  3. On the Hibernate Tab, ensure Enable hibernation is selected (check mark).
  4. On the Advanced Tab, ensure that the setting for When I close the Lid is set to Hibernate (select it from the drop-down list if necessary). There should be an option for when plugged in and when on battery. Set both to your preference.
Hope this helps. Thanks for using FixYa.com

Toshiba A215-S4767 will not start up correctly.

First off, Windows just didn't like the way the computer shut off, I would just restart normally and see what happens. Next when it boots up and you get into windows, Go to the control panel > Power Options > go to the hibernation tab and make sure hibernation is unchecked. Next go the setting that reads "shutting the lid". You want to open this setting with a drop down list and pick "Do Nothing", this will keep the laptop from entering standby mode just for shutting the lid. Laptops do not like hibernation or standby modes....windows hates it and will give you all kinds of problems if you continue to use it.

My acer mininotebooks goes on hibernating

check to see if your power cable is bad. if it went bad your computer would go to hibernate to save energy, then shut down all together. see if when you plug in your power cable if your computer shows that its charging. if it does maybe its a bad battery.

Hibernate

Laptops have a ACPI power management piece of hardware on the motherboard. Sounds like this driver is corrupt or missing. Go to Acers website and look for drivers and find the one that says ACPI or even chipset drivers may have it.
