    with a blank video channel

i turned the bottom middle screw to the point were i started to see green lines on the black sceen, then i adjusted black to the point that i could not see them...

when turning back to a tv channel the green was no better and there was a slight retrace line around objects so i turn it down a little more...

i will now check the video output chip for this colour..

? why is it when i change channels the colour of the channel number comes up on the screen in a great colour of green...

That's good news.. your display shows green which meens your green crt is working so the only other way to tackle this is in the service menu -your drives and cutoff's. you get there by starting with a set in standby next using the remote press buttons 1 after the other "display"- "5" "volume+" -"power"
the set will come on and you should see green writing top left. again using the need to scroll through the long list of settings pressing button "1" as in channel button 1 to advance the list use button 4 to decrease when you arrive at g cutoff you can use the 3 button or the 6 button to get the color you want also try the g drive again using the 1+4 buttons to get there and the 3+6 buttons to adjust once you have the right color write it into memory pressing in sequence "muting " then "enter"
you will see the display color change if you are doing it right, then you can power down the set and turn it back on again to see your resulting adjustment changes, repeat proceedure if needed.
don't adjust what you don't know about save yourself some grief

Sure turn up your screen control for that color slowly if color comes back then the adjustor is just dirty (no repairable) make sure you don't see milky white lines or a solid color on a blank input.
put the unit on a video position that has no source so the tv displays the input label but nothing else.
slowly adjust the screen control( behind the front grille little black box with 6 little knobs on it)
untill you start to see the coresponding color then back it off till the color is gone, you are done.
if this doesn't work then check your video path from jungle to crt output, your output chip may ne fried

you should never move that yoke on the crt (tube) as it will throw your alignment out. carefully position that yoke back where it was.... you can use the other 2 as a reference match the 1 to the other 2 using a pattern that i still. the control u want is behind the front grille . after you remove the grille you must remove the black panel just below the screen. after you do that you will see a small epoxy box about 3 inchs square with 6 little adjusters on it. look closley for the the 1 adjuster in the middle at the bottom that will be your screen control, follow the instructions given before.

this can shift over time, so you may have to readjust in 6 months or even sooner. this is a defect

that you might be able to live. sony replaced all three tubes under warranty when it was in warranty

causing a serious shortage of replacement tubes for those tv's. as far as iv'e heard there are no replacement tubes to be had. watch for it going to a solid color in the future our even a slight change in hue, this is the indicator that an adjustment maybe needed... if you do see the screen go to all 1 color turn the set off as this will kill the video i.c. make a mental note as to what color it was then adjust the color screen control counter clockwise a 1/4 turn before turning the set back on. at which time you can adjust the control again to obtain the correct color balance.

are you sure you adjusted the right color as mentioned? if the tube has voltage on it then the screen adjuster will make the beam in the tube increase, keeping inmind that the auto kine bias will try to back off your adjustment as you are doing it up untill a point where you will see retrace lines in the picture with the color being predominent don't leave the tube biased with retrace lines. back off the screen control untill the color fades correct color balance will be had at this point. if indeed this doesn't correct it or there is no color change then check to see if the crt has the 225 volts going to it.

chances are it does as your other tubes are sharing the supply, if it checks ok then the video output chip is not working it is on the crt board plugged into the end of the tube it's a tda # as i recall and they are cheep. also look for the small resistors around the chip, check for the right ohmage there.

always unplug the unit before doing anything and wait for any voltages to drain off about 5 min.

also if the tube is non funcioning then the tube itself may have a charge on it be carefull, the flyback might not have drained it off. never short this to ground, a high voltage probe will let you drain these tubes off safley

That would be under the MTS/SAP button.
