Re: Black blotch on page
Check that the fuser is reaching the right temperature, Is the paper coming out warm?
Is the toner loose on the paper?
To check the fuser:
Switch off the device, disconnect the mains plug and wait for 30 minutes before continuing.
Ensure that the bypass tray is closed, or you will not be able to open the front cover. Open the front cover by pressing the release buttons as shown. Pull the front cover down towards you. Disconnect the green plug - squeeze the sides of the plug and pull. Push the left and right levers outward to unlock the unit. Pull the unit towards you as shown and lift it clear of the device.
See it has toner residue at both ends.
If so, you'll need to replace it. If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it. Thanks, Joe

This can happen due the printer automatically running a cleaning cycle when any new cartridge is installed, to ensure the ink is properly run into the printhead down to the nozzles. In the main, what happens is the ink that is used during such cleans goes into the Waste Pad but sits on top if the pad is fairly soaked with ink from past cleans and is thus transferred on to the underside of the printhead - thus to get smudged on to the print paper. Ideally, fit a Waste Ink Bottle (search on youtube.com for your printer model and for the Waste Ink Bottle installation - some dealers of ink cartridges offer packs with full instructions but is generally easy and cheap to DIY). All you need is some tubing to fit on the waste ink drain tubing (normally inside the RH side .- where the printhead parks between uses - the youtube video for your model will show how to easily remove the end panel and fit the tubing) and then to put the end of the replacement tubing into a small glass (not plastic as can be easily tipped over - glass is better as heavier) so any waste ink is drained from the felt waste pads under where the nozzles park. Meantime, put the printhead into the Change Cartridge position, then unplug the power lead - NOT turn printer off as that simply parks the head again. With the head in the CC position and power off, you can freely move the whole printhead with its cartridges to the left - then make a decent pad of kitchen paper and find the felt waste pad down on the RH end and press to soak away the surplus ink. Repeat several times until most ink has gone. There is then none to get back on to the nozzle area again and you should be free of the blotching. A small torch will help to see inside the printer. There is sure to be at least one youtube video for your printer on fitting the drain system but if not - try several print cartridge suppliers (not generally the sell-only eBay ones so search using google for main dealers)
You have to empty out the waste toner bottle... The bottle is a milky white plastic and I believe it is right under the fuser unit. It should slid out toward you. Carefully dump the toner out of the bottle into a plastic garbage bag and re install the bottle and you are done....
E19 means the waste toner bottle is full. This bottle gets filled as not all of the image that you see on your copies/prints actually made it to the page and must be cleaned off so the next image is clean, The waste toner bottle on your machine can't be reached as it is built into the drum unit. The drum unit just about the EVERTHING of the image development of the machine. The drum unit must be replaced. It is easy and not real expensive. The part number is "0385B003BA". It's called a GPR-18 drum unit. You will have to either call Canon or look on the net. Now, you "could" remove the old drum unit and vacuum the old waste toner out as there is I believe a clear cap on the drum unit that can be removed for this purpose. I'd go for replacing the drum as usually when the waste toner bottle is full the drum is at its end of life. I hope this helps you my friend. Take care SPINAL
If the line has a 1/8" white margin on either side, clean your glass and mirrors.
If the line is all the way across your page, consult your users manual for cleaning the sawtooth electrode (open the front door and take out your waste tank, there is a green rod on each drum cartridge you can pull and hear a zipping noise) and cleaning the laser lens (there should be a cleaning wand under your waste tank, turn pad side down and insert in the gap underneath your drum cartridge)
The voids and blotches can be a bad black pcu, the voids san also be toner on the glass slat obove the pcu,s there are 4 slats one for each color, on the pcu itself on the upper side is a narrow long opening, the glass slat is above this opening when the pcu is in the printer. It will take a flashlight to see any toner on the glass.
to change the waste toner on your IR 5055, stand directly in front of machine and look on the right hand side of it where the power switch is a black button on right hand sdie at the back and you will see 4 screws and a metal plate that will come off the waste toner bottle is in there just empty it out and refit to machine all will work, now on your IRC3170 just undo front door and you will see a clear bottle just undo the black screw and take out the bottle and you will see a couple of little clear windows in the bottle make sure you take them out and clean them before you emtpy the bottle, this is where the machines shines a light through it to tell if the bottle is full or not so make sure you have them clean. refit the bottle and all will be ok
Sound to me you are having a toner back up, likely a full of plugged waste toner bottle, the easiest way to pick up toner is with a vacuum. Make sure the vacuum you are using has some sort of filter to prevent spreading the toner all over the room.Once you have the spill cleaned up look for the source of the spill, if it is the waste toner bottle, replace it if you have one or dispose of the toner in a plastic bag. once it is clean, then try it again.
The black slodges are most likely to be caused by the dev unit dropping black toner. Swap the black devs around and vaccum any loose toner out of the machine. The problem with the other one it that the magenta toner pump could have a fault. I would try this before cleaning the toner tubes.
