Connect an external monitor (crt or flat panel monitor) at the back of your laptop and see if the display is fine. if the display is fine on the monitor then it means to say that the lcd backlight is not working properly.

WOW!!!!!

I Had the same problem yesterday but i was able to fix it. What i did was to replace the back light. I also have a Toshiba laptop.(L35-S2173). What i did was to open the screen and to solder in a new Backlight. they cost only 10-15 dollars, which is much better compared to the $425 dollars that Toshiba was charging to repair an out of warranty Laptop. Most of the time, a bad backlight is what causes a dark screen, though it could be worse, like The Inverter could be bad, which would turn off the screen also.
To find some guides on how to Open up a toshiba laptop, visit this website http://www.laptoprepair101.com/laptop/2006/02/04/toshiba-laptop-disassembly-manuals/
And also visit this website to find out about Backlights and Inverters http://www.ccfldirect.com/

BUT WAIT, HERE IS SOMETHING THAT OCCURS MOST OF THE TIME, PEOPLE TEND TO DISABLE THERE LAPTOP SCREENS. YOU CAN ENABLE IT BY PRESSING Fn and F3 AT THE SAME TIME.(Fn+F3). IT WILL COME BACK UP BRIGHTLY. ANOTHER WAY PEOPLE DISABLE IT IS BY GOING INTP THEIR BIOS( BASIC INPUT OUTPUT SYSTEM) SETTINGS. IN A TOSHIBA LAPTOP, MOST OF WHICH USE PHOENIX AWARD BIOS, BOOT UP THE LAPTOP, THEN GO INTO THE BIOS SETTINGS BY PRESSING F2. THEN SCROLL LEFT USING THE ARROW KEYS TO THE POWER SETTINGS THEN ENABLE THE "POWER ON DISPLAY" OPTION. OH AND TO DO ALL OF THIS TO SEE IT, YOU MAY HAVE TO CONNECT THE LAPTOP TO ANOTHER SCREEN.

If all the other lights are on as they normally are try connecting a VGA cable from the laptop to an external monitor or LCD TV and see if it displays as it should. If so you have a bad laptop screen. (LCD panel)

How would the pattern on the screen change if a pure blue screen were substituted for the white screen?

What can you do if the laptop LCD screen turned completely white? 1. Loose connection between the video cable and the LCD screen.
2. Defective LCD screen.
3. Defective motherboard (I assume the graphics card is integrated into the motherboard). Here's an example of a laptop with white screen. When you turn on the laptop, it starts but the image on the screen is completely white right from the beginning.

Most likely you still can use the laptop with an external monitor. Just connect the monitor to the VGA port on the back or side of your laptop and then switch the video output from internal to external mode.

On Toshiba laptops you can toggle between internal and external screens using Fn+F5 keys. Hold down Fn and press on F5 until you get video on the external monitor.
On IBM laptops use Fn+F7.
On HP laptops use Fn+F4.

It's possible that you have to use a different key combination on your laptop but you get the idea.

On some laptops, in order to be able to use the external monitor, you have to connect it to the laptop and then restart the laptop so the external monitor is detected by the laptop. In some cases the laptop screen may turn white because of poor connection between the video cable and the LCD screen. If you want to check this connection, you'll have to take apart the display panel because the connector is located on the back side of the LCD screen.

These laptop service manuals and disassembly instructions may be useful. Always check the video cable connection first. Reconnecting the video cable may fix your problem.

If reconnecting the video cable doesn't help, most likely you have a problem either with the LCD screen or with the motherboard. The best way to find out witch one is causing the problem is testing the laptop with another working LCD screen. you will need to connect to another monitor or your television to your computer with the vga lead monitor connection click start control panel display change display settings adjust resolution this may vary depending on your operating system you should see a no 1 and a no 2 with detect and identify keep an eye on the screen when you select the number tabs this may vary depending on your operating system when you select the no 2 tab this should be the extended desktop always click apply after making any changes or click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll to monitors right click select scan for hardware changes if you can get an extended desktop your monitor is faulty if you cant get an exended desktop

Nitrotrike gave you the process you should go thru to solve this problem... But before doing it, or having someone do it for you,...locate the fan or fans on your laptop, and using a vacumm **** all the dust from them... If the overheating is been caused by clogged air channels, this action will help your laptop get back to work. Let me know if it helps
