Question about Nikon D40 Digital Camera with G-II 18-55mm Lens

1 Answer

Nikon d40 I cannot take a picture with the Automatic zoom with either of my lenses. This just happened out of the blue. It did not fall. I thought the battery was low so I charged it and but still does not work. It works fine with manual. But, I do not like that mode. Any tips

Make sure you are using lenses with built in motors. not all lens type work with the d40 as the camera does not have a motordrive in the body.

D40 nikon camera lense is stuck

What do you mean by "opened it up"? I hope you did not disassemble your lens. If you did; STOP NOW! Without training, you will never be able to reassemble your lens yourself. Contact your closest Nikon USA repair depot or a local qualified camera repair man.
If, on the other hand, you mean that you simply removed the lens from your camera and the part in question is on the rear of the lens, please post a photo of the lens with an arrow or some type of identification of the part you are talking about.
One other thing; have you asked your photography instructor to look at your lens?

Canon on nikon

The Canon lenses are FD mount which means that you will need to get an adaptor to convert the FD mount to fit the F mount on the Nikon. An example of the mount can be seen here:

As for the speedlights the hotshoe mount will accept them on your Nikon, put them on with fresh batteries and try them out.

My 55-200 automatic lens will not auto focus on the lower focal lengths, but will on the longer ones. It hasn't been dropped or mishandled and the standard lens works fine. Nikon D40

From the sounds of things it sounds like a part is worn in the lense, my advise is to contact Nikon and send away to be repaired, they have a great service department. I have used them and they are quite inexpensive to.

What white balance mode are you using? Try changing it to Auto. Did you ever try to clean the sensor?

A/F PROBLEM

The D40 (& D40X & D60) will not autofocus with the G series lenses. The three cameras above require a newer DX series of lenses for the AF to work.

Nikkor lense

You need AF-S or AF-I Lenses. These have the autofocus motor built in to the lense. The D40 and D40x does not have an autofocus motor in the camera body itself, while the D80, D300, D3 Etc to have the motor in the camera. You can use most old lenses on your D40x, but you will have to focus them manually.

See Ken Rockwells page for a lot of D40 / D40x info

Nikon d40 digital camera

When the camera is in auto focus mode, it will not take the picture until it locks onto a subject. If there is not enough light, the camera will "hunt" for something to focus on. Since it can't define any edges, it won't allow the shutter to release.

The D40 base model does NOT have a powered focus lever for autofocus, so if the autofocus is not working, suspect the lens.

Lens slow to focus and makes a bad grinding sound

It sounds like a lens problem, not the body's. Have you tried it with another lens? If you don't own any lenses, go to a camera store and ask to try out one of their lenses, if the problem goes away then you know what is causing it. The lenses usually have 5 year warranty.
P.S. You should consider the option of buying another lens for the baseball games that has high zoom and VR.

Nikon d40 autofocus

This happened to me once on a D70... When mounting the lens, make sure it clicks in all the way when turning counterclockwise. Also it may be worthy to note that both the lens AND the camera must be set to autofocus mode ("A" switch set on both lens and cam).
