Remove rear panel but not the screws holding the element in,then remove the plasitic fan housing bottom right then the fan 10mm nut,then the belt the drum will then lift out.the rollers are then easy to replace

Most likely your rear brake shoes are worn down far beyond the min limits and you now have metal to metal contact, which causes the grinding noise, overheating and poor braking. You most likely will need to replace the drums. The other rear wheel will probably be the same.

How to get drum pads off a 2000 dodge caravan


The pad drums of your 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan can wear with use. Heat buildup in the brakes can glaze, warp or crack the drum. If that happens, replacement of the drum is the only way to fix it. In most cases, you can remove the rear drums, replace them with a new set and leave the existing shoes on the van. Take a minute and inspect the brake shoes thoroughly while you have the drums off the van.


  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear of your 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan with a lug wrench. Do not take them off the wheel studs.
  2. Raise the rear of the van with a jack and support it on a set of jack stands. Place the stands under the rear suspension, making sure they are secure. Remove the lug nuts from the wheel studs and pull off the rear wheels.
  3. Check the rear drum where the wheel studs come through for retaining clips. These are used during the manufacturing process; and if they are still on your van, they need to be removed. Pry the clip off the wheel stud with a flat head screwdriver and discard them. Most vehicles will have two clips on each brake drum.
  4. Grasp the brake drum on the outer edges and pull it straight off the wheel studs and brake pads. Discard the old drum and slide the new drum into place, aligning the holes in the drum with the wheel studs. Push the drum in until it seats completely. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the van.
  5. Position the wheel back on the wheel studs and install the lug nuts by hand. Raise the back of the van with a jack and remove the jack stands from under the suspension. Lower the van to the ground and tighten the lug nuts with a lug wrench.

The drum drive belt2_bing.gif could be slipping especially if it occurs more with a large load. Other possibilities are: A drum support wheel bearing could need lubrication or be replaced. Also some drum support wheels have a rubber coating that wears off causing misalignment and noise. Possibly drum gasket (sometimes felt material) where drum meets rear panel is worn allowing metal-to-metal contact--should be replaced. I have a 98 dodge stratus, are the rear breaks rotors or disc?


You do not require a mechanic to do this job. lst remove any wheel front or back. You probably have front disk and drum on the back.
To remove the rotor, you will see two bolts holding brake capalier on the rotor. Remove these and pry the capalier from the rotor. Now you need to remove the pads. Simple to remove, but when replacing you need a 6 inch c clamp to force the pressure mechanism back into the rotor in order to replace the pads. Remove the rotors and have them researfaced any any machine shop. Cost around $10 per rotor. Pick you up some antisizing compound and high temp grease. Follow instructions on the label. Now remove a back wheel, if you do not see a rotor then its a drum. To remove a drum you will need a several tools to replace the drums. Purchase these at Harbor Freight or Sears. Much cheaper at Harbor freight. Now remove the other wheel and repair one wheel at a time, by checking back wsith the wheel that has not been disambled. Before replacing have the drums reserfaced. Now once the job is completed you need to tighten up the wheel by using the special tool which you purchased. Tighten a little at a time AND ONCE THE WHEEL becomes hard to turn back off a turn. Do the same thing to the other wheel. May take you all day to do the job. But it's the way I learned to do a brake job. Hope this is helpful.

Rear wheel locks up when appling brakes


Hi, check wheel for bad/leaking brake wheel cylinder. An easy way to do this without removing wheel is to look at the outside of the drum from the backside for any brake fluid. If the backside of the drum looks wet, replace wheel cylinder. If it looks dry, remove tire and drum to inspect wheel cylinder for any brake fluid. If rubber boots on end of wheel cylinder appears to be dry, adjust rear brake turning adjusting screw (long bar on bottom with a "star" in center), replace drum, if you cannot put the drum back on easily, back up the screw you turned until the drum goes on easily but without too much slack, start car, apply brake, check drum to see if it can come off easily, if not, repeat until drum is snug, but not tight.
New rear wheel cylinder part avg.: $25-$35 ea.

Dust and dirt accumulating on brake parts during normal use may contain asbestos fibers from production or aftermarket brake linings. Breathing excessive concentrations of asbestos fibers can cause serious bodily harm. Exercise care when servicing brake parts. Do not sand or grind brake lining unless equipment used is designed to contain the dust residue. Do not clean brake parts with compressed air or by dry brushing. Cleaning should be done by dampening the brake components with a fine mist of water, then wiping the brake components clean with a dampened cloth. Dispose of cloth and all residue containing asbestos fibers in an impermeable container with the appropriate label. Follow practices prescribed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the handling, processing, and disposing of dust or debris that may contain asbestos fibers.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the hub and remove the wheel.
  3. Mark the relationship of the drum to the hub and pull the drum from the brake assembly.

If the brake drums have been scored from worn linings, the brake adjuster must be backed off so the brake shoes will retract from the drum. The adjuster can be backed off by inserting a brake adjusting tool through the access hole provided. In some cases the access hole is provided in the brake drum. A metal cover plate is over the hole. This may be removed by using a hammer and chisel.
To install:
  1. Align the mark on the drum to mark on hub and install drum
  2. Align the mark on the wheel to mark on drum and install wheel
  3. Adjust brake lining as needed. Pump brakes
