Toshiba 52HM84 Ballast replacement help

I am getting similar symptoms from a bulb going out, it cycles through the green and red lights. Sound comes on but picture stays black. It keeps powering on and off again. Usually this happens about once a month but if I let it rest for about a day it works fine. Since it is beginning to happen more frequently now, I want to get it repaired. Hard to just throw away a $3,000 investment.

Anyway, after a lot of research most people tend to think it is a ballast problem. Since the part is only $60 that seems like a good place to start. Only problem is that I sure would like some tips or pointers to help me out replacing the ballast. Especially if anyone has a link to a good tutorial. I know my way around the inside of computers, but first time inside a TV.

Also wondering if you agree that this is probably a ballast issue. If it is the light engine, that would mean around $700 or more for repairs. BTW, the bulb is new and is not the problem.

It is very easy to fix/reolace the ballast in these sets. I just fixed the ballast in mine yesturday,by replacing a single resistor on the ballast board (the resistor is labled R3 on the ballast), Google "Toshiba ballast replacement" and there is a nice write up with pictures to guide you through it. If you can soulder you can fix it and save alot of money.

SOURCE: 52HM84 Toshiba DLP with apparent failed lamp (replaced ballast)

I found R3 on the original board to be open, along with reading an open on CR1, D5 and D6. All the other transistors and the transformer check out. The only thing I have to do now is find out the specs of the diodes. The replacement board also had CR1, D5 and D6 open (R3 was OK). There had been some threads on various locations where remanufactured boards had bad components (the transistors were changed but not some of the other components).

You've got to replace the bulb. I've had my KF-50WE610 for four years. Mine just went out again too. This is the third bulb in four years. The bulbs are expensive too - $100 -$200 each

Actually ballasts run between 60-80 dlls. It does sound like you doi have a ballast issue, everytime a TV resets the ballast is the issue. Go to discountdashmerchantdotcom you'll see the ballast prices. Plus they also have free troublehsoot.

Problem with Toshiba DLP Projection TV Model #52HM84

It is possible the lamps may be defective or that they may be the wrong replacement for this model, as it may have a different wattage setup with the ballast. If you want to try to order the TB25 lamp from a different vendor, you can order the original Toshiba replacement lamp for this model (52HM84) from a major Toshiba parts distributor at the link below:
