Question about Magic Chef MCWC30MCG Compact Wine Cooler

1 Answer

MCWC30MCG stopped cooling

The unit just stopped cooling one day.  An intermittent clicking sound started and the compressor was really hot. It's about 3 years old.  I got a phone quote of $350-400 if the compressor has to be replaced!!  Could it be something simpler that I could replace myself?

Handy hubby,
welcome to Fixya,
It sounds like the compressor!
Not worth replacing this very expensive part.

Was it so hot you could not keep your hand on the compressor?
If yes then it's most likely your compressor.
Happy to be of assistance.
Sorry about your lose

    Dear Handy Hubby,
    I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Magic Chef is now owned by Whirlpool.
Here is the Consumer Affairs Tel #. 800 253-1301
They handle all customer problems above and beyond Customer Service, and are authorized to do what it takes to retain all customers.
It's easier to keep the customers you have than to find new ones!

Prior to 2006 all major components including compressors had a 5 year warranty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So if it's been 3 years since you bought it, you should be covered
I think they will take care of you!

    Bless You,
    Huuum

Unit is running and not cooling

If the compressor is quite hot to the touch, that usually means that there is a problem with the compressor. Could be a short or open winding, but either way you will need a new compressor.

Not cooling and compressor is hot

If the overload was open circuit you would not have a hot compressor. The overload activates because the compressor won't start. If there is a capacitor starter, change it. If not let it cool for at least a day then try again. If still no go, replace compressor.

Wine fridge not cooling

It is normal for a compressor to be hot to the touch, but not super hot. clicking noise sounds like the relay located on the compressor terminals is bad. Hope this helps

Motor very hot; not cooling

If the compressor is hot it is possible that it is short cycling. Make sure the compressor is running and that the condenser fan motor is running if air cooled.

I had the same problem. I fixed the problem by replacing the main cooling fan that is mounted over the electrothermal cooling unit.. Fan can be ordered from RepairClinic.com.

You need to replace the Ptc unit attached to the compressor. Go to REPAIR CLINIC.COM and order the following part. 1206838 Ptc relay. They also will show you were it is located and how to replace it. Compressor tanks very rarely go bad. It is an $11.00 dollar part

Replace PTC Starter and that is it. You can also try to open and clean contacts, I did and it worked.
