My cdrom makes noise when i insert dvd

What type of noise does it make? If you hear the tray close and then the disc "spin" for a minute or so, that is normal. If it sounds like something is shaking or rattling or lasts more than 5 minutes, there is probably something wrong.

If it is an extended spin noise, the drive isn't recognizing the disc. Check if there are scratches and try another disc. If you hear a shaking or rattling, do not use the drive. It's probably better to replace the drive (check if it is under warranty - usually 1 year). This drive has an IDE connection. You will need to check your motherboard specifications to identify if you can replace the drive with a SATA optical drive (more common now) or if you need to find an IDE drive. (Note: OEM drives do not ship with the data cables or software discs, this will matter if you get a SATA drive.)

Some optical drives have a problem with the magnet that holds the disc for the laser to hold it. Some people fix this problem with duct tape; at <$20 for a SATA DVD-RW OEM drive, it isn't worth my time to fix.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment describing your sound and the computer you have for additional help.

INTERNAL CD DRIVE WONT OPEN

There are a couple of issues that can cause the tray of an internal optical drive to stay closed when you press the drive's eject button. One: there is no power to the drive. If the drive does not show up in the list of discs in the computer, this could be your problem. (In any Windows OS, click Start > Computer (My Computer) or double left click the icon for Computer.) You will need to open the computer and check that the power cable is fully seated and oriented correctly (it won't fit the wrong way). For a desktop, an IDE drive uses a 4 pin power connector. A SATA drive uses a 15 pin power connector. If your power supply has additional power connections for the type of drive, try a different connector. If the power connector has a 4 pin to 15 pin adapter, make sure this is fully seated. (Try a new adapter.) If that doesn't help, make sure that the power supply is providing enough power for all devices. The second problem may be failure of the open/close mechanism.

I recently had an optical drive that slowly had the open/close mechanism fail. At first the eject button wouldn't work when there was no disc in the drive; using the Eject option from the OS did work. Then the OS eject stopped working consistently and it wouldn't eject with a disc in the drive. I used the Emergency ejection option (straighten a paperclip)to check for a problem with dirt in the mechanism or the belt slipping and then put a disc in the drive. Replacing the drive was my final solution. (A new CD/DVD burner is under $20; thus it wasn't worth my time to fix the mechanism on a 5+ year old optical drive.)

Some Lite-On (and related OEM) drives develop this problem early. For these drives, the problem is that the magnet that holds the optical disc in place actually blocks the drive tray. The solution that some find works, is to remove the optical drive and open the outer-case of the unit. (This should be avoided if the drive is still under warranty.) There is a circular section in the case and that is the section that you want to access. Pull out the magnet and make two circles of duct tape just slightly smaller than the magnet. Stick a nail through the center of the circles. (You need the hole to make sure that it still functions correctly. The circles are smaller than the magnet to avoid getting adhesive inside the optical drive.) Stick one of the circles to the magnet (and then put the second circle on top of that). Replace the magnet and close the case of the optical drive. Replace the drive in the computer. Plug in the data and power cables and close the computer back up. Make sure that the data cable is still firmly connected to the motherboard before closing the case. (Note: be careful to stay grounded relative to the computer case when you remove the drive and then replace it.)

The SE-S164L is an external drive, so you may not have given the correct model. Please add a comment with the model optical drive in your computer. Slot-loading drives require a different trouble-shooting routine.

I hope this helps.

How do you open the case of a Samsung WritemasterSE-184M? I had the drive turned upside down and tried to open the door and now it doesn't work and I can hear something rattling around inside.

If this Optical drive is a computer model then look for a small hole in the face of the tray. Straighten a paper clip and insert into that hole and gently push. The mechanical release will operate and let you pull the tray out gently as the disk may be hung and you would not want to scratch it.

Hi,

It happens when the Software that is not Windows Vista capable (such as printer software, CD burning software, and games) may have modified the registry to cause the optical drive to not function.

Please follow the steps below:

1.From the Windows Vista default Start menu, point to All Programs, Accessories, and then clickRun.
2.In the Run dialog box, type: Regedit. Click OK.
3.In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
4.In the Registry Editor window, locate and then click to select the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
5.From the File menu, click Export.
6.In the File name dialog box, type: Savedkey, and then click Save.
7.Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters file, and then from the Edit menu, clickDelete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
8.Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters file, and then from the Edit menu, clickDelete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
9.In the Registry Editor window, from the File menu, click Exit.
10.Shut down Windows® and restart the computer.

Turn the computer off and find a large paper clip. straighten the clip and there should be a very small hole below the drive tray. Push the clip into the hole and it will manually open the door.

Dvd drive wont open , can hear motor working but drive wont come out. we believe the cd holder isnt shifting up/down to allow the drive to activate & open

Turn the computer off,Remove power cable.Use a peper clip insert it through a hole infront of the dvd drive this will eject the door.Make sure once this is opened the tray is aligned properly, slide it in and out.Push it in all the way then power up the computer. This may work for a while, before it goes again,so you might have to replace it.
Good Luck

Wont work

Dear Mitodelvalle,
Here are few things that you might want to check:
  1. Open the chassis of the computer and make sure that the cables that go to the drive are properly connected .. there should be 2 connectors.. One for Power supply with 4 wires and one is a ribbon cable for data. Make sure that the power supply cable is properly connected. you might want to remove and plug it back just to be sure.
  2. If that doesn't work then most of the computers come with a spare power connector hanging loose, you might want to try the spare connector.
  3. Try ejecting the optical drive by inserting pin in to the small hole in the front of the optical drive, just below the tray... Straighten a paper clip and insert it straight into the pin hole below the optical drive's tray and the drive should eject, then pull the trey out gently with your hand and make sure that nothing is broken inside...
Try the above steps and that should help. If you still need assistance, please let me know and I would be glad to assist you further.

Regards,
Srinivas.

Grail Montes explanation above makes sense on several levels. However his visuals (pics) do not give an example using the Sony CRX230EE CD-RW in question. It also does not demonstrate a clear explanation of the tray motor belt he mentions. I will demonstrate this much clearer as well as introduce another cause which involves the Tray Gear. The Tray Gear can have broken teeth, or be misaligned because of attempts to pry (or force) the Tray Door open by other means than it was designed (e.g., with a screwdriver).
