Question about Sony KV-32S66 32" TV

KV-32s66 Flashing stby timer LED- no pic no sound

This set was running fine and just turned off. When powered back on the Stby timer LED flashes and power relay clicks on but that's it. Found Horiz output Q502 (2sc5148), MX0841 (IC601), (R607) .47 ohm fusible, and D648 B+ zener (EZ0150AV1) bad and replaced. All replaced and even swapped out Flyback without any luck. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Flashing LED is a steady rate (i.e. not like an error code) just continuous flashing until power is turned off. The Power supply 'G' board appears fine (all voltages OK) and the 'A' board looks great and all semiconductors (except big IC's) check OK in circuit.

  • crabbybill Oct 07, 2008

Just went thru the serv manual and this unit doesn't have an IC301 but the led is a steady blinking

  • crabbybill Oct 07, 2008

Power board 'G' board and chassis board 'A' have been checked and rechecked for basic semiconductor and capacitor problems --nothing out of the ordinary.

  • crabbybill Oct 07, 2008

diodes and basic semi's check ok

  • crabbybill Oct 08, 2008

What is 'G2' voltage? not familiar with that term. The set is essentially dead except for blinking LED. Just found a post on another site that states that a weak CRT can prevent IC001 from starting up

  • crabbybill Oct 08, 2008

Spent a couple hours checking out "c" and "a" board components with no luck. Checked the caps in the Horiz circuit again and semis check good. I adjusted the screen setting (G2 -learn something everyday)with no sign of startup. Something was taken out by or was caused the failure of the Horiz Output and power supply. I'm starting to think that IC351 (y/c jungle)may have been zapped--just running out of things to check.

  • crabbybill Oct 08, 2008

B+ and 9volt running low now -- checking semis again especially IC643 but may have a problem with T603 or T605 -- I'll be back

  • crabbybill Oct 09, 2008

Found B+ low. Went out and got a 'real' Sony IC601 (MC0841B-F) and replaced it. Checked caps in the area. B+ still low at 60.6 vdc and the 9 volt line at 1.17vdc. Checked full wave bridge (D602) and it's OK along with caps C606 and C607. Removed T603 and T605 to see if any physical burns underneath etc--both look brand new, but continuity is the only thing that I know for sure. Any suggestions

T603 & T605 are ok in your tv.
You can have +b volt and rest of supply voltage if Q648 collector is low. Its power / standby switch transistor. If tv is in protection mode, as your tv is, you will not get full +b

THe continuous blink can indicate a low G2 voltage as well. Is there any sound at all or is the set essentially dead except for the blinking standby light?

Thanks,
Dan

OK, these sets are known for having the CRTs go bad over time. Try the following:

Open up the back and turn up the screen control on the flyback transformer a bit (clockwise). If the picture pops on, the CRT is likely to be going bad. This is only a temporary fix to buy you time to replace the set. Replaceing the CRT is an option, but not worth the expense.

If the above does not resolve the problem, further measurements internally will need to be taken.

    Keep us posted.

    Dan

  • ABRsvcs Oct 08, 2008

Normally, if the jungle IC was the problem, the sound would continue to work OK. I have seen cases where the sound does not, but those are rare. IC351 is Sony part number 875208273 (CXA2095S).

    Keep us posted.

IF the 9V line is only measuring 1+ volts, there is something on that line that is pulling the voltage down. Look for filter caps on the 9V line that are shorted or any ICs that are fed from this line that may be defective as well.

Hi, Before we further think about solving the problem, what was the blink code or how many times did the Standby LED flashed ?
We need that code.
thanks, :)

Here are the standard definitions of Sony TV blink codes:

  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).

  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.

  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis

  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.

  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.

  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505

  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.

  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.

  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.

  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.

  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).

  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

Sony KV-32S66 standby timer led flashes constant, slow; no picture

You could try touching a soldering iron to each joint, but if tv had perfect image before turning off, could be a bad flyback. Cheap part and easy repair BUT must know how to discharge any high voltage if any stored in capacitor of flyback. Might be a good repair to take in to have a pro fix it.
