Our printer is not printing clear copies. We are getting a color bleed through of red onto the black, making for a very murky, unprofessional copy. What is the solution? Should I have a service tech come out?
Hi, i fixed this problem but do have another however your solution might be to clean each cartridge using the user accesible sliders on each cartridge. they can be found by lifting each cartridge in succession and flipping the white cover up. on the left is a green knurled thumb thing. slide it back and forth 2-5 times and repeat for each cart. good luck. h

If you call Brother at 1-877-276-8437 and tell them that your unit is "missing black", they may cover a new printhead under a special warranty. Make sure you tell them it is "missing black" on prints and copies.
You can set the MFC-9440CN to print with the black toner cartridge only through the printer drivers.
If you are using Mac, this needs to be changed before you print or set a preset.
If you are using windows, follow the below steps.
1. Go to Start menu \ Control Panel \ Printers (devices and printers for windows 7)
2. Right click on the MFC-9440CN and select "printing preferences"
3. Under the "basic" tab, you will see "color mode"; simply select "mono"
Colored vertical streaks - looks like a transfer belt problem, and it's not user fixable. You may need a new belt unit - you can find it for around US$ 80-120, but you may want to have a technician inspect the unit first, since it could arguably be the drum instead, and you don't want to fork around US$ 100 and replace the wrong part. You can try showing a printer sample at a print shop; by looking at the streaks it is possible to diagnose drum, fuser or belt problems. Here you find a much more detailed page, for another printer model, but the issues are mainly the same for most color printers: http://www.laserquipt.com/support/idx/26/452/article/Toner-Smearing-Issues.html
this message normally indicates a physical problem somewhere on the machine, try turning it off for a couple of minutes then back on. if it keeps giving you this message it should at least give you the error number as well
do you use generic ink? If yes, the generic ink might have clogged the ph (valve stucks inside because of lack of additives!).
Anyway, do this: (use near full level ink carts!) make sure carts are placed well and are secured. Press menue then start bk copy then fortimes arrow up. machine will be in maintenance mode. press 7 then 6 then 4 then start bk copy. machine will refresh ink in tubes and ph and do some cleaning cycles. when finished press 7 then 6 then 3 then start bk copy. ,achine runs a power purge. when fisihed press 9 then 9 to leave the mode. press ink etc. to run a quality test print. If you still cant see any magenta, the ph is defective and needs replacing!
