Most computers beep when they first com on. this is not neccessarily a problem unless it's causing the computer to freeze or throws you into a menu.
if it's more than one beep or beeps in a pattern, that would be an error code and could be telling you theres a problem. Please refer to your users manual for alerts usually located in the troubleshooting section of your manual. If no manual is available, post your brand and model number here and ill see if i can look it up for you.
Hope this helps.

A memory module must be installed in slot A. Do not try to operate

the computer with a memory module in slot B only.

If you install a memory module that is incompatible with the

computer, a beep will sound when you turn on the computer. If the

module is installed in slot A, there will be a long beep followed by

a short beep. If the module is in slot B, there will be a long beep

followed by two short beeps. In this case, turn off the computer

    and remove the incompatible module

Beep codes dell

What model dell laptop ?
we've heard from Studio 17 customers who have the Core i7 processor here on Dell's Forum and other places like ForumDeluxx who are hearing a series of 7 beeps when they try to start their systems.
Yesterday, we posted a new Studio 17 BIOS (A05) to that should ensure the Studio 17 does not have this issue once the updated BIOS is applied. For those of you who have a system that sounds a series of 7 beeps when you try to start it, there are two solutions - one is a DIY fix and the other is contacting Dell and having a service technician come out and take care of it (see bottom of this post for options on contacting Dell).
The fix involves reseating the CMOS (a.k.a. coin) battery inside the system and then (this is important) updating the BIOS as noted above.Even if you are not experiencing beep codes, we recommend updating to the A05 BIOS.
Here is a link to the Service Manual that will explain how to reseat the internal CMOS Battery.
You will need to remove the back plate from the system, so please make sure you are comfortable performing this task.
1. Turn Off and unplug the system and turn it bottom side up
2. Remove external main battery from the laptop.
3. The rear plate for the system is held on by 6 screws.
Remove all 6 screws and remove the plate.
4. With the battery compartment facing you, looking in the top right hand corner you will see the CMOS battery.
5. Using a minimal amount of force and a flat tool, pry the battery gently from its seat (it is held on by sticky substance)
6. Unplug the battery from the motherboard by disconnecting the white connector.
7. Wait for approximately two minutes and then reattach the battery cable and reseat the battery.
8. Replace the rear plate and the retaining screws and reseat the main battery.
9. Attach the AC adapter and power on the system.
10. Update to the A05 BIOS revision
11. If a 5 beep code is heard, switch off the system and restart it.

I can turn my laptop on but the screen is black

Do you hear a beeping sound when turning it on? Try connecting an external monitor (Desktop monitor) then press FN+F8 (Dell laptop only) and FN+F4 (HP laptop only). If it works on an external monitor, you may need to contact your computer manufacturer. check the warranty and request for an LCD monitor replacement.

If you hear a beeping sound when turning on your laptop or no power (no light). you may need to reseat the memory (RAM) or check the AC adapter (power adapter).

Let me also know the system model and computer manufacturer.

Keep me posted.

Right, it's a laptop...

The beeps are the results of a Power On Self Test (POST)
It could be main memory problem from the Beep code.
Disconnect it from the mains, take the battery out.
you'll find a small 'trapdoor' held in with a small screw.

Carefully remove this, you'll see a small pcb that's more chips than pcb.

Now you can see the main memory, it will have a connector on 1 edge and clips on opposite edges.

Important:- Ground yourself from static, i.e. don't stand on a carpet in your fave Nikes. If you don't have a static strap, or know what one is. Then a bare foot on a tiled or concrete surface is good.

1. flip the 2 clips with your thumbnails, and the module should pop out. lift carefully avoiding touching the bare connector.

2. check to see if there is any crud on the connector or removed card.

3. If clean, place card back into connector at a 30 degree angle rock down and up a couple of times, and then press home, the clips should click.

The card will stay put without the cover on. But I suggest you replace the cover.

Put battery back in and try it again.

With any luck it was just a bad connection on the ram card.

Blank screen(beeping sound)

Hi Powee,

It's definitly a memory issue. What you might wanna do, is open your CPU and take out the memory sticks from the memory slots. After this, try either blowing or vacumming (if you have one of em small PC vacumm cleaners) the slots whcih contained the memory sticks. Also, dont forget to blow off any dirt that might be on the memory stick(s) itself.

After this, just insert the memory stick(s) back into it's slot(s) and try to rebppt your computer again. Most of the time it should work. However, if you still face this issue, then it means that your memory itself is corrupt and you might need to buy a similar capacity memory altogether.

As a side note, if your computer comes from a manufacturer like dell or acer, you might wanna get them to look into the issue if it;s still under warranty (or even if it's not). Certain "branded" computers have their own way of functioning. Hope this helped.
