Question about Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Screen shuts off within 10 seconds after turnon, if power not connected to car

Nuvi 660 less than 18 months old;
when plugged in, in the car, works fine. when not plugged in to power, shuts off within ten seconds. looks to me like bad batteries. (retired electronics specialist/field engineer).

please advise if you agree - source of batteries and replacement procedure - I haven't been able to figure out how to open the case and don't want to destroy it experimenting to open it to find the batteries

thanks. .

    Yes Sir.
it does have the lightning bolt.
The battery shows no charge (green cells). Leaving it plugged into a live outlet (cigarette lighter plug) 20 minutes, no change in the number of green cells showing on the battery. when unplugged again, it cuts off after a few seconds.

    any other ideas??

additional reading on internet searches for garmin 660 showed me that the 'life' of the Lithium Ion battery is generally about 15 months (just enough to get it out of warranty - clever dudes, those Garmin folks), and that leaving it in the vehicle when it is in the sun is bad for the battery (ooops, did that. responsible for that shortening effect myself).

found below directions on replacing the battery - please advise if these are incorrect.

    directions from a website
It is pretty easy to open up your nuvi,(but not recommended by Garmin or me)...
looking at your nuvi from the back flip up the antenna. You will see two tiny torx screws on the antenna.
Remove them and carefully separate the antenna housing. Pay attention to how the antenna flex is seated
because reassembling the antenna housing can be tricky.
On the left bottom side the pin assembly that holds the antenna in is spring loaded.
Pull the pin towards the center and you will be able to separate the antenna housing from the unit.
Underneath you will find two more tiny torx screws holding the main housing togather.
Remove those two screws and you are almost home.
Now you need the special plastic tool that you can get on ebay.
The tool is used for opening ipods without mangling them.
Gently pry the case apart with this tool.
Start where ever it is easiest to get the tool in.
Once opened you can figure the rest out for yourself.
The battery is flat and rectangular and is seated behind the circuit board attached to the back cover.

I'm confident I can follow those steps - have worked on a lot of different electromechanical equipments over the past 40 years.

When you have it plugged into the car charger, do you see a lightning bolt over the battery status indicator? Yes, it sure sounds like a battery issue but see if you get the charging symbol.
