The specific optical drives are made for specific laptops, you will have to order one from the company that makes it. Or you can get an external optical Drive. USB interface

ADD OPTICAL DRIVE TO GATEWAY FX6840

OK add one. All you do is take the old one out and put the new one in after you open the case and unplug the power cord. There might even be an open slot under or above the one that is already in the computer so just push the plastic covering that faces the front of the computer out so the new optical drive can go in it's place. By optical drive you are talking about a DvD or CD player, right?

Toshiba Dvd / r/rw TS H552D/GAAH is tryin but wont do anything

Since it's saying no disk in drive, it is recognizing the device, just not the disk. You're probably up for a drive replacement. Try booting off your restore disk just to verify that it's not a virus. Don't restore or you'll wipe out everything. You could try compressed air to clean any optical sensors. If that doesn't work, replacement is in order.

If it's within warranty, it's covered. Otherwise, verify what type of drive it takes (SATA or PATA) and it's a drop-in fit. The bezel will be different, however.

Since you've already removed the drive, you're aware of disassemby.

Gateway MT6451 Does not turn on

Probably the mainboard or flaky power supply.

I'd start by replacing the power supply. Buy one you can use in a new machine, though... or "borrow" one from another machine.

Install more memory, install new dvd/cd drives

As far as the memory in your system goes, each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-8500, DDR2 PC2-5300, or DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 1GB per slot. You can add two 1GB modules to your present configuration if you choose.

For complete info go to: Crucial for Gateway 835GM

You can also go to www.crucial.com and run their scan feature. It's safe and works well.

Note that you should install memory in matched pairs, so if you should buy 2 more 512MB modules, make sure they are the same kind/type. Also realize that should you upgrade to 4GB of RAM, unless you have a 64-bit OS, it may not recognize all 4GB.

As for the drives, any "big box" electronics store will have the drives you need/want. Even Wal-Mart has a decent selection of internal drives. The drives should work with no problem. Gateway and other companies put fancy bezels on the front, but they have buttons and hinged doors that will allow most drives to be used. One thing you need to make sure of is what type of drive you need. That is, what type of controller is used, either IDE or the newer SATA. If you are not sure, comment back and i will try to research it further.

OPTICAL RAILS

you will need to open up the side panel, and then remove the screws, or use the slider to open that..then the cd or dvd will slide out the front through the slot..you will need to disconnect the connection cable and power connector in back, before it releases.

Need to install a new hard drive into my son's Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Pro Laptop. Need to know which Hard Drive to purchase and how to fit / set-up. Any help you can provide would be gratefully...

If the laptop is less than 3 years old, then any 2.5'' hard drive will work.
Some laptop need slim hard drive, if you buy a slim 2.5'', this will mount on all laptops after 2004.
To get more details submit the problem on Fixya again providing information on your laptop's model.
