I have a dell dimension 4600... windows xp... SP2... modem = Conexant HSFi V.9x 56k DF PCI...
Problem = connection pops up every now and then (twice a day perhaps) and just connects by itself... I'll go out and come back & it's been connected for a couple of hours. Have resorted to unplugging line from wall at night & when I'm out and about. Running Avast Antivirus V4.8 Home Edition, it doesnt seem to know anyhtings wrong. Am not sure whether it's programs trying to auto update or some virus etc...

HERE is the driver for your Ethernet card directly from dell. This one is for windows XP. go HERE if you have a different Operating System ans select the correct one. After you select your operating system it should be the only download with the description of "driver" on the list under the networking section.
C drive will show at least 2 partions; one will be about 32mb in size;others will be larger...install windows on one of larger partions; go to dell.com/drivers and download in proper order drivers for your version of windows onto same HDD as windows...if a driver file is not on drive, dell with ask if you want to create one;YES
most likely the modem is dead, I think your refering to the 56k softmodem (dial up) if so you can replace that for around $5 - $15 at most computer repair stores, even walmart may carry them im not to sure.
You can use virtually any PCI-modem card for your computer. The Dell Dimension 2400 has 3 PCI slots and unless you have some fancy CPU cooler that takes up all the space inside the machine, any card will fit.
1st you need to download or install all the drivers for your Dell computer. Try to use the drivers/utilities disks first. Once you can get online, go to Dell.com and look up your model 4700 and download all the missing drivers.
Your Linksys Router is not a modem. The Linksys has the modem connected to it for wireless connections.
