IBM warranty repair and DHL

By Horner - usenet poster

IBM shipped me a DHL box to return my TP for warranty repair, via next-day
10:30am service.

I dropped it off 12/21, and DHL delivered it 12/27. For the first 3 days I
called them each day to ask about it and was told it would be delivered
"tomorrow".

IBM sent it back yesterday, and it's past 10:30 now and I don't have it. I
called DHL and they said wait here all day to sign for it, and if it doesn't
show up, then wait here all day tomorrow, too. (not those exact words)

So: what experiences have others had with DHL and warranty repair?

I'm really disappointed, because I'd hoped for really good service from IBM.

One quick note:

IBM didn't switch from Airborne to DHL. Airborne got bought by DHL (or
merged into DHL, if you prefer), so now they are one in the same.

Although my prefered O/N service has always been FEDEX, my IBM
experiences with DHL have usually been good. Sometimes a 1 day delay.

I've used IBM EZ-Serv warranty 3 times and was always amazed at the
speed and how much they'd work above & beyond the call to make me
happy. It's why I'm quite willing to spend extra to get a Thinkpad
instead of another brand, but I haven't needed it since they switched
to DHL. My first experience was shipped by UPS and went to a repair
center close to the UPS main distribution hub in Atlanta. I was told
that they'd put the repair center there simply to speed up the return
process. I don't remember where the second time went but the last time
was carried by Airborne and was just as fast. I called, they had a
mailing box at my house the next morning. I sent it back the same day
(called for pickup) and had the computer back on the third day. This
is how it went all three times. The mailing box uses air bags now
instead of a sling but that's the only difference I've seen.

Wherever its fixed it still has to be delivered to a DHL depot near you
for the local van to bring it to you.
so youll have a local depot, that is near you ,withinsay 20 miles in
the greater LA area . thats where youve to call to see if its stuck
there, awaiting some more packets to come your area.
At least thats wehat happens here with DHL.

My experience with IBM warranty repair in all three of my instances has been
superb and quick. Airborne Express used to do the shipping for IBM and they
were the ones used for my repairs. One time they found no one at home and
didn't leave the package. I then told them to leave it without finding
anyone at home and they just about didn't do that. Someone happened to see
them before they left a second time and we got the computer. I would always
let them leave the package without me being there. You just sign off on a
liability release. As for the time required, I have always gotten the
computer back in 3-5 days. The service is geared to business which can be
critical. Your experience seems to be related to the holiday plus some
difficulty with DHL. I wouldn't stay home to meet them. My time is worth
something, though not much monetarily these days.

Doesn't all of that go through Atlanta? Following the news, packages

It all depends on how badly you want or need it.
The first thing id do is call DHL and ask if its with their local
depot. then where that depot is and how far is it from you. If its that
urgent go and collect it yourself.

p.s. DHL called me at noon to tell me it won't get here today, so at least
I won't have to stay at home the rest of the day. But they can't tell me if
it will arrive tomorrow or not. Apparently they don't have much capability
to track shipments between drop-off and delivery.

I live in a major metro area near Los Angeles.
