Question about Dell Latitude C600 Notebook

1 Answer

Dell not booting

Same problem as mentioned in August. Tried a new HDD in it and I got the white screen with blue letters. Indicates "computer is protected by a password authentication system. Cannot access data without correct password."

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do a Google Search for "LATITUDE.EXE" which is a DOS program that will reset your password. You will find various sites and forums explaining how to download and run this file.

The other option is to call DELL. However you must prove that you are the legitimate owner of the laptop.

Hope this helps!

What does the blue blinking light at the very bottom, under the blue power button indicates?

According to the Dell 531 owners manual:

"Drive activity light-
blue light - A blinking blue light indicates the computer is reading data from or writing data to the SATA hard drive, CD, DVD or HDD."

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd531/en/OM/appendix.htm

Safe to ignore. It will blink even when the computer appears to be idle.

I have a dell desktop and have blue screen. I have tried everything. I turn it on now and it says no hard drive.Help.

Hi,
Turn the computer OFF and as soon as turn on the computer keep tapping F2. This will boot the computer to the BIOS. Under BIOS you will see an option which says "BOOT" select that and check if you can see the HDD. If you can See the HDD, you need to just re-install the Operating system or else the HDD could have gone bad.

Dell inspiron 531 with vista home premium, sata DVD/hdd, wont boot past bios screen, blinking cursor in top left corner. with nothing hooked up, says no boot devices available. i have tried each one solo,...

That blinking cursor is the way in which the BIOS is telling you that Windows or any other OS is missing . Since you are getting it without even an hdd connected it means that the southbridge is defective. Which means that the motherboard is dead, replace it.

Show a blue screen

You need to go into the Setup Utility or BIOS when the computer boots. You need to enable the computer to boot from the CD drive, and set up boot priority with CD Drive first, then Hard Drive HDD.

Then it will boot the disc.

You need to backup ASAP. I use a knoppix boot cd with an external hard drive to do this. Boot CD and copy as much as you need, if not everything from your hdd to your external. remember to look closely at drives since the will not have drive letter like dos. Once you've backed everything up, restore the OS. Most dells have a restore cd. if you dont have that, you have to use a regulaar windows cd to reinstall windows. the dell one is easier since you get all the drivers and extra software.next install good anti-virus and update definitions. then copy everything you need back from external hdd. remove extra startup stuff and enjoy the fast new system while it lasts.

Disc failure 0 press F1 to continue

He has accessed the bios and change the boot setting devices by enabling the floppy drive which you do not have.

Go Bios (F1 or F2) on first screen. and select load default setting

Also go to Boot Options and make sure 1st boot is the HDD not FDD or removable disk

Also in any menu mention of Floppy Disk make sure it is set to not installed or disabled.

keep me posted

XP won't recognize 2nd SATA drive and shows 1st SATA drive as drive F:

To get Windows to recognize the 2nd HDD, you have to initialize it in disk management.

http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/prepare_second_hdd/prepare_second_hdd1.shtml

As far as the drive letter for the OS install, that was caused by the HDD not having an existing partition and other drives in the system having one (Either USB Drive, Printer with a card reader, 2nd Internal HDD)

Here is a Microsoft article on how to change it, but you'll notice MS doesn't recommend you try it. (Personally, I can live with ah HDD with a drive letter other then C:, so can Windows.)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223188/en-us

In the future, when installing XP, boot to the CD, run the install to the point of formatting the hard drive. Once formatted, turn off the computer, reboot to the XP install again, the HDD will be assigned C:

As far as the drivers go, they needed to be installed in this order:
Desktop System Software
Chipset
Video
Audio
Network
Modem
