I dropped the phone and the speaker got hard to hear, as if something shifted. I opened the top portion of the phone thinking I'd see something obviously askew but saw nothing I recognized.
My 5 year old later dropped the phone and it started working correctly again. I've since dropped it once more (I'll use the belt clip now when I'm on headset). Back to low volume.
Headset volume has always been fine.

What phone do you have?
On most phones there are buttons on the side to adjust volume.
There are also options for volume in your device's settings, under sound.
If it is hard to hear someone during a call you can turn on speaker mode which will make the sound a lot louder.
C55-A Toshiba , Low volume on my ear phones . Click on speaker icon . Click on Speaker icon, at top of speaker Volume . This will take you to Speaker properties . Select drop down menu in the advanced tab. I changed my bit rate until I found one that worked with my ear phones .

The problem may also be due to the low earphone volume. Please check your earphone volume to rectify this.
There is also a possibility of minor damage in the earphone unit due to which your not able to hear properly. You have to replace the earphone unit in this case.
If you open the phone on your own it will void the warranty. My fiancee had the same problem with his phone. He turned it upside down and lighty tapped the speaker against the padded sofa arm. It instantly worked, by doing this the speaker contact was shifted back into place. If this does not work you should probably send it back.
This happens at many phones due to the speaker which buzzes because of the waves made by the conversation. For example try calling someone and be near a desktop pc speaker or radio and you'll hear the same buzzing noise
