This is such an elementry question but I am lost. When I bought my Sony DCR-TRV22 they told me to buy a Monstercable that has a 4 and 6 point end. I am finally trying to use it (several years later) and it seems like both my laptop and my camera only fit the 4 point side - where the heck does the 6 point side go? Or did they sell me the wrong cable and really I need two 4 point sides? Do they have those?

USB and firewire cables are completely different and are not interchangeable.
A firewire cable is rarely supplied with a camera and 99% of the time you have to buy one.
They are available are most places that sell computer gear.
The camera will have a 4 pin socket and most PCs use a 6 pin socket.
If your computer has a 6 pin socket you require a 4 to 6 pin firewire cable.
Firewire is also called IEEE1394 or iLink.
You require a firewire cable to connect to the PC then use Movie Maker to capture the footage.
Cameras use a 4 pin socket and computers can use 4, 6, or 9 pin sockets.
Determine which socket is on the trget computer and buy the necessary cable.
FYI: Most Laptops use 4 pin and most Desktops use 6 pin. Avoid adapters if possible.
For example; if your Desktop computer has a 6 pin socket you buy a 4 to 6 pin firewire cable. Firewire is also called iLink or IEEE 1394.
You can buy the FireWire kit at your local electronics store or department. Some kits come with a FireWire cable with USB connectors, as well as "ends" for that cable that come in both 4 and 6-pin configurations. Make sure you ask the store rep and read the package to ensure you have the right ends. You can also buy cables that are already appropriately "ended".
Most cables are 6 pin and connect to the 4 pin port (with a 4 pin end)
