Maybe its write protected in that way you cant put any data or erase from it. its located from the side of your memory card.
formating your disk is as easy as selecting FORMAT DISK/MEMORY CARD

I HAVE A SAMSUNG DIGIMAX 430 CAMERA THAT I WAS TRYING TO USE I BOUGHT A SCAN DISK MEMORY CARD (4MB) FOR IT, BUT WHEN I TURN THE CAMERA ON IT IT SAYS FORMAT SO I CLICK OK THEN IT SAYS I NEED TO "CHECK...

I would try a different SD card in it to find out if it's a problem with the camera or the card. If you bought an SDHC card, it may not be supported in such an old camera, and you may have to find a plain old SD card.

The camera reads memory card error but when I go to the menu to format the card the format catagory is not highlighted and when you page down it skips over the format area. I am using a scan disk mobile...

There are no 16GB SD cards. A card that size is actually an SDHC card (yours actually sounds like a Micro-SDHC card). SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but they are slightly different. Many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

You really don't need a card this size on a still camera. 1Gb is plenty. If you really need more space, you can carry a spare, like people used to take extra films with them on holiday.

I don't know why the 512Mb card is giving you trouble. This might indicate an actual fault.

1)tried to take pictures on wrong setting 2)failed to format disk

try using a bit of software called Recuva

it should be able to get the files off the card. I am pretty sure the camera would not have taken the pictures if the card was totally unusable

Disk is asking to be formatted - already been in use

this could be a help to you, first off most, cds, and memory disk, get scratched or worn out, that causes errors or corrupt file readings. so thats why it asked you to format, formating helps clean the drive up,like a tune up on and old car.and if you dont and try to put high grade gas in before the tune up your still going to have the same problem,so in saying you have to put the old one back in,format it. and then put the new one in after you completed formating the old one.good luck, hope that helped you.

Just bought the camera. I bought 2.0 GB of memory (San Disk)

I'm sorry but it is hard to understand your problem. Did you try to remove the card and see if there is any dirt or something blocking the contacts? Also if the camera will not format the card try pluging the camera into your PC and right click on the icon labled "Removable Disk (E:)" (the "E" may be a different letter) and the click on the Format... option that appears (about halfway down the list that pops up) and click start and click "OK" on the warning that pops up.
**AS THE WARNING STATES YOU WILL LOSE ALL SAVED DATA ON YOUR CARD BY FORMATING IT**

I cannot format my new memory card

is the card unlocked, take the card out and see if the little button on the side of the memory card is in the lock position, hopefully this fixes your problem, otherwise I would take the card back
