Question about Linksys WRT160N Wireless Router
I just got the linksys wireless router WRT160N and when I put the installation CD in it say 1628 installshield can not complete. Can someone please help I just got a new laptop and would love to use it!!!!
You do not need the CD to install the wireless router.
Assuming you have a dsl or Cable Internet connection established already, lets get you setup.
Plug the cable provided with the router into the cable/dsl modem.
You will need additional cable, for now, to plug your laptop into the router. Please do so now.
Your router will automatically assign an IP address to your laptop. It sould be 192.168.1.100
Your router will automatically assign an Gateway address to your laptop. It sould be 192.168.1.1
Your IP address is your physical address to therouter, Hense to the cable, Hense to the Web. Hense.
The Gateway IP is the actual IP used as the Gateway to the cable/DSL modem, hence, this is your actual connectivity. OK, let's get serious. The cable modem gets its IP information from you cable/DSL provider. This information is then collected by the router and the router assigns a local address thus allowing you to connect more than one device, (i.e. computer, printer, camera) and gain Internet access from that router. Its kind of like spoofing or fooling the system into thinking each device has its own address from the cable/DSL provder and allowing it to have a connection to the Web. I explain this as I feel understading how the router actually functions weill enable you to better utilize thenetwork and also protect your computer and devices from outside attacks.
The cable/DSL provider will provide the following:
Your Linksys Router takes this information, and makes it the base IP for its setup. It then allows you to assign a local address block for your network devices, called "Private" IP's. These are IP addresses that cannot or should not be found on the Internet.
In the above example the Gateway address of 192.168.1.1 is the physical address of the router. To verify this information Go to Start, Control Panel, Network, Locate your Local Area Connection. This is always the wired network card in your laptop. You should also see one for your wireless network card. We will not yet be working with this device, but remember where it is as we will be working with it soon. Right-click on the Local area connection and go to Status and left-click. On the tabs at the top of this window, click on the support tab. You should now ba looking at the addresses I talked about earlier. And if all is well, you quite possibly could be able to open your browser, Internet Explorer or Mozilla or Safari and access the Internet. Having said that let's configure the router.
I am going to take a short break and hope you understand all I have spoke of. I await you response and any questions you may have.
My name is Todd and I am here to help you. We will get you up and running in no time.
