36" RCA- loud whine/squeal when it is plugged in, otherwise no power.
36" - F36650. When plugged in, a loud whine/squeal is heard. I believe it is coming from a transformer (horizontal transformer?). Also, while unplugging the set (or if it is left plugged in long enough) I can hear a clicking, I believe coming from this same transformer. It is not the flyback transformer, but a smaller transformer mounted on the board. Also, it is not encased (like the flyback is), I can see the E's and I's. Do these symptoms coincide with a faulty transformer (I believe it is a horizontal transformer)? If so, are they expensive, and where should I go for one?
Re: 36" RCA- loud whine/squeal when it is plugged in,...
The HOT Hortz output transistor has gone home, 99% of the time from a faulty IVHT (Flyback Transformer), very common on the ctc187cl* chassis. The factory Flyback is no longer available, I have had problems finding an aftermarket one to replace it with.
The HOT is a BUH517, but you can also use a 2SD5129. It is the transistor mounted on the siler heat sink with a metal clip rather than a screw, just in front of the flyback.....
If you replace just the HOT, most of the time you will get a rapid arc (27,000volts - BE CAREFUL!!!) from the lower (yoke) post on the flyback. If the flyback is shorted, It may also just burn out the HOT and go right back to "squealing"....

The tv have a dead part call the FBT-Flyback transformer,a big black block of plastice with a red wire with a black cap hook it to the CRT-(Tv picture tube). The FBT-give the tv highvoltages to the CRT(Tv picture tube). This tv is old model of an analog tv probally can't find part for it anymore.
The squeal maybe produced by the flyback, It looks like is a common defect on this chassis, but check any other defective part in the horizontal section and the power supply as well.
The fly back part # is 257805 but i would call RCA just to verify it or you can check inside the Tv's lid for that part number.
Check globalsemi.com website.
CaptC, those sets are infamous for that problem, you need to replace the following parts:
Flyback Transformer part # 257805
Horizontal output transistor part # 2SC5148
there is a coil off the base of the driver transistor I think it`s L4401 that should be removed from the set and scrape the wax off the legs then re-install and re-solder it and you should be good as new, good luck
Confirm service # from back of set = F36650 YX01.......... Transformer red HV lead attaches to CRT & Horiz output xistor is on heatsink next to transformer = 2SC5148 ......... Rca part # 257805 or ASTI 2078 and 237470 xistor............ Do not use a generic transistor = name brand only............T.
Yes it is the Horizontal Output and a few capacitors and resistor that needs changing. If you are good at desoldering and soldering you could do this. I think on this set its the Q4401, caps C4402, Cr 4402, Check Q4802, C4102, If you just want to try new parts and hope it works then you have to check voltages at different points to fix set. Now it also could be Bad Flyback in this set too. I have seen where you change flyback and horizontal output and c4402 would do it. R4118, R4114
