Has anybody used this mode? How much resolution do you lose when it's shown on a wide-screen monitor?

Unless you stretch the image to remove the black bars on the monitor, you don't lose any resolution. You do lose 25% of the image. So, if you zoom that out you will lose 25% resolution.
