This machine worked fine for ages, then poof (I have a button pushing child) it stopped working. I have been unable to figure out or find online how to resolve this issue. I am able to play dvds,..but cannot record to blank dvds from my Dishnet DVR any longer although I could before. I tried a cold boot with no dvd in the tray to no avail. HELP! It won't bring up the functions menu, sub menu, allow be to record live television either.

Eventually the front panel display will show "SERV" (after its "HELLO" messages). Anyway, pressing then on the Remote Control tells me that I have an Error Code of "04" which is a Digital PCB or Communication Error (whereas an Error code of "02" means a "Defect of RAM drive"). (To exit from Service Mode, press then which should get you back to "SERV" and then POWER-OFF the machine). Hopefully, your manual will display your error codes.
Perhaps the remote control is not set to the same control code as your DMR-ES40V. Codes may be set to 1, 2, or 3 on the remote by holding down the enter button and one of those number buttons for several seconds at the same time. The factory default is code 1. Try 1 first. If that doesn't work try 2. If that doesn't work try 3. If one of those codes doesn't work you may have a bad remote or a bad sensor on your machine. On DMR-ES35V models the sensor is located just to the right of center behind the black window
That error means: There was a power failure or the AC plug was disconnected while the
unit was on. The unit is carrying out its recovery process. This
process restores the unit to normal operation. The unit is not broken.
Wait until the message disappears.
I suggest you unplug all the cords o the unit and after 2hrs replug and see if the error is gone.
When activated all the buttons will be disabled and a child will not be able to alter any wash programme or option settings. Once selected this feature remains activated, even when the machine is ‘off’. To use this feature press the ‘Child Lock’ button and hold down for 2 seconds. The child safe icon will begin to flash. When the icon stops flashing the feature is activated. If any of the control buttons are pressed, the child safe icon will flash and the machine will bleep 3 times: no alterations to the control settings will be allowed. If power is interrupted, at any time, pressing any button will reactivate the child lock feature.
To deactivate this feature hold the ‘Child Lock’ button down for 4 seconds. You will then hear a bleep and the child safe icon will go out.
If this is not the problem than turn off the AC power for 30 mintes and then power the machine back on an everything should be OK to use as long as no Error Codes are displayed.
You have the same issue as the one who is posted here at Fixya. But this requires you to open the DVD cover. If the unit is still under warranty, its best to bring it to the authorized service center. If not, you can try and test this if it'll work. http://www.fixya.com/support/t221217-u61_error_code
"I have the same problem (same error # same model of DVR).
I noticed it happened after I left a DVD in play mode and paused for a long time.
I saw a message on the Internet that error U61 can mean that the lens is unable to move (return to its normal position).
Internet message said that person unpluged everything, then opened the
cover to the DMR-ES15 (3 screws) and gently pushed the DVD head back
towards the rear of the DMR-ES15.
I assume that would void his
warranty, but I am considering trying it since the time to have it
repaired versus the replacement cost makes the possibility of a
Here is part of that actual Internet message. I hope it helps you:
Yesterday, my DMR-ES15 started to malfunction, giving me the error U61.
No matter how many times I tried to press Enter, and Power On, the machine kept
re-booting with the error U61. I noticed that the drive was making some
noises as if the Read head was not able to park properly. So I decided to open up the unit and find out why.
I took out the 3 screws holding the top in place. And then moved the drive head mechanism back (pushed it towards the back of the unit).
I then plugged the power in, turned it on, and amazingly there was no more U61 error.
I test the unit this morning again and everything seems to work properly again!"

I have same problem with es40v - f60 error with no response to troubleshooting protocol. This machine also was used very little & also has a history of turning itself on. Panasonic used to make high quality products. A shame that their products are no longer trustworthy. I can understand that machines break - i'm very frustrated to learn replacement parts are not available. Guess i need to re- think brand loyalty.
