Pump goes on and off

My pump cycles on and off. It use to run whenever plugged in and that controled the on off, of course. Now it will maybe run for 20 min or so shut down and come back on in say 3 or 4 min. I've cleaned it and checked the power source and seemed to be ok. It's not a year old

The picture looks like the Sunterra pump that came with my freeform pond kit I purchased at Aldi's 5-6 years ago, but just had installed this spring. The pond is 4 x 6 x 1 foot or so deep. The problem is the small triangular shaped filter has to be changed constantly. The pond is in the sun, has a large plant in it and 3 goldfish/koi. It used to go a day or two before clogging up, but now it's an hour. The water 'bubble' shrinks down to nothing and I'm afraid my fish aren't getting enough oxygenation to their water.

Does the pump have thermall protection? It sounds like its getting hot and tripping the thermal protection switch in the pump windings.

I have installed a Hunter psr22 pump start relay and connected it to a Hunter src irrigation controller and when I cycle the irrigation controller to manual all stations it will not start the pump. There...

So the mv and c are supplying power to the transformer/relay and out of it, but the pump won't start until the relay is forced.
I'm thinking the relay contacts are oxidized, and need to be cleaned. When they have oxidation, current goes up, and voltage might appear ok. If any start capacitors are in the circuit, they can be faulty, breaking down under a load, while reading ok. I haven't heard of any caps in these systems, but just in case.
The following blog may help you- it's about different controller situations:
Hunter's website has some things to check concerning the controller:
Looks like it could be microprocessor lockup. It's quite a process, but here's what they say is the fix:
Good luck, hope this helps, and thanks for using FixYa.

Torpedo pump...I have one when I plug it trips breaker

I had the exact same issue. I left mine out for the winter and when I plug it in, the breaker trips. My warranty was up so my friend took it apart. The seal had broken alowing water to leak into the bottom the pump where the wires connect to top of motor. This is supposed to be water free and is protected by several seals.

I am currenlty trying to put sealant where the cord goes into unit to stop water from going in. I will let you know how that works.

One tip my friend recommeded is to make sure there is no stress on the cord as it appears this seal is weak and and kind of stress will break it. hope this helps -- Rob

With the water running the MQ pump runs intermittently

This is a problem with your bladder in the pressure tank or the pressure switch. Ether one will produce this cycling on and off. Good luck.

I have a grundfos mq3-35b, you turn on the tap pump goes on, then after about 30 seconds it goes off for about 10 seconds and goes back on again, this keeps repeating as long as you have the tap running,...

The control unit is faulty, I had that problem twice.. I have now bypassed the control unit and use a normal pump pressure switch to fine..The Grundfos company at first said I had to have air in the lines then admitted the control assy. was at fault. after two new units in three years I did away with the control unit.

Pentair whisperflo pump will not turn on

See if you can manually operate each pump. I suspect the problem is not with the pumps themselves. Track the control from the pumps to the motherboard, which I suspect. Whatever it is, it has all the pumps in common with it. Maybe just a simple control switch that is exposed to the elements.

Pump is over heating

There are a few possibilities. Pump duty cycle, ie. how long it is designed to run at one time. Most electric motors have a code on them or say continuous or some other duty cycle range. Is your pump designed to run as long as you run it. Next is wiring, are you using the correct gauge wire for the load? A wire size too large will generally not hurt, but decrease the wire size and your wire will heat up along with the motor. Usually this can cause the breaker to pop or the motor to over heat and stop. Another wiring issue could be a short or bad connection on either end. Some 230 motor will run on one leg of voltage but less efficient. Check the connections at both ends and put a meter on them to check for shorted wires and voltage on the wires at the pump. The last thing I can think or is that you have a defective pump in some way. Perhaps a bad bearing or seal. I am not familiar with pump controls yet. I am getting one soon. I am guessing there is a start/run capacitor in it. If it starts the pump it shouldn't be the source of your problem. Assuming all equipment you have is designed to work together. Good Luck.
