IBM PS 1 will not diskcopy floppy disk. error message says "drive types or diskette types not compatible". Data is on diskette but at Circuit city they tell me it reads blank. Command DIR A shows all data recorded. All I need is to have this diskette backed-up.

Ibm ps 1 computer uses older type floppies either 360kb or 720kb these cannot alway be read by modern computers also to copy these you have to use the same capacity disks most disks are the HD versions 1.44MB. the older drives. If i remember right you can tell the 1.44mb disks by an extra hole on the disk.

Ntldr is missing at startup


To fix your problem please follow the below steps.
1. Locate your Windows XP/2000 installation disc and place it in your CD/DVD ROM drive. If you don't have this disk, then you cannot proceed further.
2. Restart your computer.
3. When the computer restarts press any key on your keyboard when you are prompted, "Press any key to enter setup." Most computers are configured to boot to another device other than a hard drive. Since the Windows XP/2000 installation disk is bootable, you should see the prompt. However, if you don't see the prompt you may need to change your boot priority in your BIOS. To do so, enter the system BIOS by following the onscreen instructions upon startup. Then navigate to the Boot Priority menu and modify another device, such as a CD-ROM to boot prior to the hard drive. Then reboot your computer.
4. After you have pressed any key, the Windows XP/2000 setup screen will appear. After loading, press the "R" key to repair the Windows installation. The screen will appear black. The computer requests which installation you would like to log in. Generally speaking, press "1" and "Enter." If you have more than one hard drive or more than one partition, the procedure may be different. You must know which hard drive or partition your Windows operating system is installed in. You are subsequently prompted for a password. If you haven't set up one up, you can just leave the query blank and press "Enter." The phrase "c:\WINDOWS>" and a blinking cursor subsequently appear.
5. Type "copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\windows" (without quotes), where "D" is the letter of your CD/DVD ROM drive (your optical drive may be different, especially if you have more than one). Eject the CD from the drive and type "Exit" (without quotes) to restart your computer. The NTLDR file will be copied from the installation disc to your hard drive.

maybe the floppy disk drive is defective or maybe the IDE cable is deffective, or maybe the cable on the floppy drive is not properly inserted , try to replace IDE cable of the floppy drive if still the symptoms happens replace the floppy drive

My computer lost ( ntlpd is missing) plus said press ctrl alt del it's not coming up.


Sounds like you've got some corrupted files. If you have your Windows disc, try a reinstall/repair or try to drop back to a previous restore point.

If those don't work, you might try to reformat/re-install your software. (backup your data if you can beforehand as reformatting will wipe all data from the drive).

This can even be a hardware problem, like the HD controller bad, which caused the file problem in the first place. Or a virus can cause such issues, which would make reformatting/reinstalling a good idea as well.

Make sure you have a defragment task running every month, if not every week. You can schedule to run at night or during the day, whenever you're not at the computer. If you turn it off when you're not using it, just leave it on that one day (or night) that the defragment needs to run... or start it manually before you go to sleep and unless it's a large drive, it should be done when you get up.

I think you should press F2 to go to the setup page.

There, you should change the order of your boot device.

set the first boot device to hard disk

set the second boot device to cd rom

and the third to floppy.

follow the instructions and click save and continue

Diskette Drive Failure for Dimension C521


Most C521's have no floppy, if you have none:
boot to the BIOS, (F2 at boot) go to the drives setting, diskette (May be listed as floppy disk drive) set to NONE, exit and save settings

This issue can be caused by any of the below reasons.

-Corrupt boot files on the computer.
-Settings for hard disk drive are not correct.
-Floppy diskette or CD in computer causing issue.
-Boot devices not set properly.
-BIOS corrupt or misc. setting not set properly.
-Connections loose or disconnected.
-Bad Hard disk drive or other bad hardware.

Solution:


Corrupt boot files on the computer

If the computer has no bootable files on the drive it is attempting to boot from it is possible that the computer may halt at " verifying dmi pool data..."

To resolve this issue:

Boot from a bootable floppy diskette. Ensure that this diskette was made on the same Microsoft Windows operating system that is installed on your computer.

Once at the A:\> prompt type "sys c:" and press enter. This should report the message "File system transferred." Once transferred remove the diskette and reboot the computer.

If the computer continues to not boot attempt to re-create the master boot record by booting from the bootable floppy diskette again. Once at the A:\> prompt type "fdisk /mbr" and press enter. This should return you to the prompt without giving you any message. Once at the prompt remove the diskette and reboot the computer.

Note: The above information only applies to Microsoft Windows users. If you are running a Linux / Unix variant or other operating system such as OS/2 and the computer is freezing at this DMI message ensure that Linux / Unix has been properly installed first and/or your boot manger is not corrupt.

Settings for hard disk drive are not correct

The computer freezing at "Verifying dmi pool data..." may be caused when the hard disk drive settings within CMOS are not set properly. Enter CMOS and verify that the hard disk drive settings are set properly and/or that it is set to Auto Detect.

Floppy diskette or CD in computer causing issue

Verify no floppy diskette or CD is in the computer. In some cases the computer may be trying to boot from either of these drives causing issues with the boot sequence.

Boot devices not set properly

The computer stopping at " verifying dmi pool data..." can be caused when the boot devices on your computer are not set properly in CMOS. First, verify that no CD or diskette is in your computer. If a CD or diskette is in the computer attempt to remove this first to determine if it was attempting to boot from it.

If No CD or diskette is in the computer and your computer still halts at the DMI message enter CMOS setup and verify that the boot options are set properly. We commonly recommend that the floppy be set the first boot device, hard drive as the second boot device and the CD-ROM as the third boot device.

BIOS corrupt or misc. setting not set properly

If none of the above recommendations have resolved your issue attempt to reset the BIOS / CMOS settings to the factory or default settings.

Connections loose or disconnected

If the computer has been recently moved or new hardware has been installed in the computer it is possible that a connection may be loose or even disconnected. Verify that the hard disk drive, floppy and CD-ROM cables are properly connected.

Bad hard disk drive or other bad hardware

If you computer continues to freeze at the DMI message after attempting all of the above recommendations it is possible that the computer may be freezing because of a bad hard disk drive or other bad hardware in the computer.

Before replacing any hardware we first recommend you attempt to erase everything on the hard drive and start over.

If you're unable to get to the point of re-installing the operating system it's likely your computer has a hardware issue and it's suggested that the hard drive be replaced. If that doesn't resolve the issue then have the motherboard replaced.

Trubleshoot Motherboard


More than 70% of all computer problems are related to cabling and connections. Ensure all cables are connected and connected firmly. IDE and floppy ribbon cables and power cables can often go loose. Ensure microprocessor, memory modules, and adapters such as video card are inserted correctly and didn't "pop-up" due to vibration.
System has no power at all. Power light does not illuminate, fan inside the power supply does not turn on, and indicator light on keyboard does not turn on. PROBABLE CAUSE DIAGNOSIS SOLUTION
Power cable is unplugged. Visually inspect power cable. Make sure power cable is securely plugged in.
Defective power cable. Visual inspection, try another cable. Replace cable.
Power supply failure. Power cable and wall socket are OK, but system is still dead. Contact technical support
Faulty wall outlet;circuit breaker or fuse blown. Plug device into socket know to work and test. Use different socket, repair outlet, reset circuit breaker or replace fuse.



System inoperative. Keyboard lights are on, power indicator lights are lit, and hard drive is spinning. PROBABLE CAUSE DIAGNOSIS SOLUTION
Expansion card is partially dislodged from expansion slot on the motherboard. Turn off computer. Take cover off system unit.
Check all expansion cards to ensure they are securely seated in slots. Using even pressure on both ends of the expansion card, press down firmly on expansion card.
Defective floppy disk drive or tape drive. Turn system off.
Disconnect the cables from one of the floppy drives. Turn on the system, check to see if the keyboard operates normally. Repeat until you have located defective unit. Contact Technical Support.
Defective expansion card. Turn computer off.
Remove an expansion card. Make sure expansion card is secure in expansion socket.



System does not boot from hard disk drive, can be booted from floppy disk drive. PROBABLE CAUSE DIAGNOSIS SOLUTION
Connector between hard drive and system board unplugged. When attempting to run the FDISK utility described in the HARD DISK section of the manual you get a message, INVALID DRIVE SPECIFICATION. Check cable running form disk to disk controller on the board. Make sure both ends are securely plugged in; check the drive type in the Standard CMOS Setup (in your motherboard manual).
Damaged Hard Disk or Disk Controller. Format hard disk; if unable to do so, the hard disk may be defective. Contact Technical Support.
Hard Disk directory or FAT is scrambled. Run the FDISK program, format the hard drive(See HARD DRIVE section of manual). Copy your backup data back onto hard drive. Backing up the hard drive is extremely important. All Hard Disks are capable of breaking down at any time.



System only boots from Floppy Disk. Hard Disk can be read and applications can be used, but booting from Hard Disk is impossible. PROBABLE CAUSE DIAGNOSIS SOLUTION
Hard Disk boot program has been destroyed. A number of causes could be behind this. Back up data and applications files.
Reformat the Hard Drive as described in the Hard Drive section of the manual. Re-install applications and data using backup disks.



Error message reading "SECTOR NOT FOUND" or other error messages indication certain data is not allowed to be retrieved. PROBABLE CAUSE DIAGNOSIS SOLUTION
A number of causes could be behind this. Use a file by file backup instead of an image backup to backup the Hard Disk. Back up any salvageable data. Then do a low level format, partition, and high level format of the hard drive( see Hard Disk section of your manual for instructions). Re-install all saved data when completed.



Disk formatted on IBM PS/2 will not operate with this system. PROBABLE CAUSE DIAGNOSIS SOLUTION
The IBM PS/2 uses a different format than other computers. IBM PS/2 disk format will not work in an AT type computer. Format disk in the AT type computer insert disk into the IBM PS/2 and copy the files you wish.



After install an expansion card (network card, tape drive card, etc.) the system no longer works properly. PROBABLE CAUSE DIAGNOSIS SOLUTION
No power to monitor. All or part of the system may be inoperable. The new card may work but a mouse or COM port may not work. Change the interrupt or RAM address on the new expansion card. See the documentation that came with the new card in order to change pin settings. many expansion devices come with proprietary software that will assist you in doing this.



Screen message says "Invalid Configuration" or "CMOS Failure." PROBABLE CAUSE DIAGNOSIS SOLUTION
Incorrect information entered into the configuration (setup) program. Check the configuration program. Replace any incorrect information. Review system's equipment. Make sure correct information is in setup.



Screen is blank. PROBABLE CAUSE DIAGNOSIS SOLUTION
No power to monitor. Power connectors may be loose or not plugged in. Check the power connectors to monitor and to system. Make sure monitor is connected to display card, change I/O address on network card if applicable.
Monitor not connected to computer. See instructions above.
Network card I/O address conflict. See instructions above.



System does not boot from hard disk drive, can be booted from floppy disk drive. PROBABLE CAUSE DIAGNOSIS SOLUTION
