Question about Digital Cameras

I have an old Sony Hi8 Handycam model CCD-TR705E. Have not used it for about 4 years and decided to upload tapes to DVD via a DVD recorder. Worked fine for the first 5 hours of film then suddenly picture not visible (sound is fine) but when in review mode (press play then rewind without pressing stop) can see pictures. Have tried using a new head cleaning tape. Do you think this is very dirty heads or more serious? How can I fix it if head cleaner tape doesn't?

Thanks, I had not heard of Lapping Tape. I have tried ordinary cleaning tape 4 times so will try to find Lapping Tape at Sony Service Centre... are they allowed to sell it or is it only for them to use and charge the earth for?

This is provided only to Sony Service Centers.

Lapping tape is Tool and not ordinary tape. I don't think its available in market.

I have an old Sony CCD TR55E Handycam, I bought from new. Now I want to transfer my tapes to DVD, and seem to have lost sound output playing tapes to TV/Recorder. Tried running tape cleaner, no succes

What is your signal path? The question you need to answer is, "Where are you losing the audio?" Are you losing it between the tape and the playback head, or are you losing it in the cable, or are you losing it at the TV/Recorder?

Does the camera have an audio out into which you can plug ear buds to test the audio from the camera playback?

Hi,

Based on the information you've provided, it seems that the issue is with the dirt in the Video Head of the Camcorder. You can try using new Hi8 tapes for recording the videos to check if they are playing back normally. If the audio is working normally in the Camcorder, then the issue is with the dirt on the video head. If the issue persists with all the tapes, then the video head can be cleaned using a dry Video Head Cleaner Cassette. You can purchase the cassette from the Sony Authorized dealers or from the local electronics store. Please make sure that the cleaning cassette is compatible with the Camcorder.
This should resolve the issue.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Bought a direct dvd recorder Sony DRV-MC10 on Amazon.USA,namely imported from USA to Greece. I can only record fotos on the DVD. When trying to record on dvd through all input connections I get an error...

Yes, the problem with electronics is the US uses NTSC and most other countries use PAL, it changes how the tape head alignes with the tape. You have to insure the device you have is both (most devices are) so try and get into the menu settings and see if you have a PAL/NTSC video selector option. If so change it to PAL.

Can't see how to play Hi8 tapes on this Sony dcr-trv340e pal camera

It's a Digital Hi8. Your tapes are Analog.
But it should play Analog also.
In the menu play with "PB Mode" settings.

Sony Handycam CCD-TR55E Service manual Required.

I have owned a Sony CCD-TR55E since 1993. It developed exactly the sameproblems as you described around 2000 and it had to go into a worhshopfor repaired. After dismantling it was dicovered that the guide poleswere jamming during the threading process. To cure this problem thesliding deck mechanism was removed and the guide poles re-aligned andaffixed to their driving arms and then reassembled. The cost of was £65in 2000. The repair was carried out by a Sony franchised Dealer.

After hours of laborious searching, I have found a link for a free download of a user manual for a CCD-TR55.

You must connect the audio cables to your recorder too. The S-video just carries the (up to) 500 line picture signal.

I have a 2001 sony digital8 handycam and it will not playback anything on my tapes even if i just recorded something or someone, and i have tried new tapes. No matter what it will not play back anything...

Have you tried using a cleaning tape? It may be the heads are dirty.
If not it may need a service, even if its unserviceable due to age they go fairly cheaply on ebay, and it may be wise to pick up a spare anyway.
But regardless with the age of digital8 and 8mm in general i would recommend backing up your tapes.
DVD recorders can now be bought very cheaply, If you buy a fairly good one (I have Liteon LVW-5006) It should have fire wire / DV link so you can transfer your pictures digitally you can then fairly easily edit your videos with something like "womble" on your PC

Don't forget to copy your disks every 5 years (or less depends how precious the films are and keep duplicates) and keep them well out of sunlight as DVD's quite often fail quite quickly, leaving one in the sun can kill it in hours.
