Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

I have an AKAI GX-4000D reel to reel machine. It plays small 3" tapes at the right speed, but when I try and play a 7" tape, the sounds are very, very fast and I can't make out what's being said. My machine is missing the outer capstan and the capstan sleeve. Is this my problem? The 7" tapes were recorded on a Wollensak machine about 40 yrs. ago.

    Hornet 6t7,
Can you please elaborate? I have the machine and need to change it TO 3-3/4 FROM 7.5ips. Captan sleeve, from what i understand, mounts on the reel. Not on the machine I have. how do I trick this thing back to 3-3/4?

Hello,
Yes, that seems to be your problem.

Regardless of the size of reel.
When the:
Capstan sleeve installed is 7 1/2 IPS
Capstan sleeve not installed is 3 3/4 IPS
Hope this helps.

I need akai part number ms244708 for a 4000d

If you look around you will likely find many many Akai 4000 series reel decks for sale..some for parts.. Akai 4000 series decks used basically the same mechanism and same parts... 4000d, DS, DS II, DB, Incidentally, the Akai 1700, 1710, 1722, 1731 used the same basic mechanisms as the 4000. .

Akai gx-625 reel to reel tape deck has no sound

This could be a head fault? Another possibilty is the preamp stage. You will need to look for something that would take out both channels. Such as an IC.

My AKAI GX 636 records but can't hear anything on playback (had recorded tape play on another reel to reel) plus the VU needles don't move when you try to play a recorded or pre-recorded tape

Trace the wires from the head to the amp section. Put your finger on where they join (during playback) and see if you can get a buzz. If you can't on either channel, look for something that might be common to both channels. Either a switch, or a pre-amp IC, as being the cause of the fault.
