Question about Audio & Video Receivers

1 Answer

I have an AKAI GX-4000D reel to reel machine. It plays small 3" tapes at the right speed, but when I try and play a 7" tape, the sounds are very, very fast and I can't make out what's being said. My machine is missing the outer capstan and the capstan sleeve. Is this my problem? The 7" tapes were recorded on a Wollensak machine about 40 yrs. ago.

    Hornet 6t7,
Can you please elaborate? I have the machine and need to change it TO 3-3/4 FROM 7.5ips. Captan sleeve, from what i understand, mounts on the reel. Not on the machine I have. how do I trick this thing back to 3-3/4?

Hello,
Yes, that seems to be your problem.

Regardless of the size of reel.
When the:
Capstan sleeve installed is 7 1/2 IPS
Capstan sleeve not installed is 3 3/4 IPS
Hope this helps.
Robert

Hi - The tape player clicks off every time I start to play a tape. It will play for about two or three seconds - there is no sound output - and then it clicks off. The tapes will play in everyother...

Most tape decks have sensors monitoring the reels to make sure they're moving. Otherwise a jam is indicated. Belts usually drive the reels and they get old, stretch and/or break.

Look inside it to verify.

Using a search engine go looking for the belts for your model and maybe even find videos showing how to replace them.

That is what WE do.

I have an Akai X-1810D unit. When I try to transfer a reel onto a blank 8-track, the end result I get on my 8-track is a lot of flutter. The 8-tracks have new foam pads. I used to transfer a 3 3/4 speed...

take a q-tip, cap full of peroxide (clean 8 trk heads / roller).......... make sure nothing is near 8 trk to cause any kind of vibration.......... have you recorded onto these 8 trk tapes (if so try erasing it by recording blank, no sound onto it then rec your music)

Slow tape speed on reel to reel tape deck

My TC-230 has the same problems and it is mechanical. Actually, its real hard to say what your problem is, but it is most likely the pinch roller is to tight on the piece that is connected to the motor. This extra tension is from a spring inside the machine and, when in storage for a long time with the machine set to stop, extra pressure builds up on this spring. Try leaving it unplugged on fast forward/play overnight. that might help.

I have a pioneer RT-909 reel to reel unit. When the playbutton is pressed, the motor starts the tape then it continually stops. I'm assuming that the motor or belt(?) is bad?

Hello I had the same issue the take up reel tensions need to be adjusted try this thread tape so that there is no slack hold one of the tension guide reels try the right one first hold it so that it is in the 12 oclock postion this is so that it wont retract to the left which will prevent the motor from stopping or going into the cut off position if it continues to play with you holding it in this position the the tension for the reels need adjusting this can be done by slightly turning the blue adjustment knobs that read PLAY / TU 7 FWD 10 one is for 7 inch reel and the other is for 10 inch reels it's the board at the very top of deck when you take the cover off turn them slightly to the left until problem is gone this is what I did and it worked
